I was barely days into my English teaching job at a high school in
Osaka when my pupils smashed the first of many stereotypes about the
Japanese. Yes, their diligence and adherence to school dress codes
confirmed all I had been told about the country's conscientious youth:
they studied hard, they filled their free time with sports and
cultural activities - and they slept.
