So we can expect the 2008 Republican nominee to repudiate the previous

They'd have to be crazy to do that. Gore tried that in 2000 and
alienated the Clinton supporters badly.
Bush is still a *huge* fundraising draw for the Reps, and plays well
with the base (except the farthest right fringe). The Rep candidate can
run on the positive Rep agenda and accentuate the positives in the
record.
The Dems still have to formulate a positive agenda of their own, and the
split between the Kos Kidz and the DLC will sink them.

That's the crux of the matter, of course - the majority of
the voting public don't identify themselves as what they're
not, and won't vote for a candidate that tries to classify
him or herself mainly on what they are not.

"Us neo-cons" aren't terribly worried about that either. The Democrats
are even less popular than the President, and all their shrieking and

I am reasonably well convinced that the Democrats could have
selected presidential candidates in both 2000 and 2004 that
would have won at a walk. I'm also convinced that 80% of
the Democratic party national leadership would have had to
step in front of a speeding train before the party would have
had any chance of selecting such candidates.

That's about my opinion too. The Kossacks would rather split the party
than have it move toward the center where they could easily retake the
White House.

While that's a reasonable conjecture, I'm not convinced that
the party itself needed to make a serious move towards the
center - it would have just required a change in the strategies
of their kingmakers. I'm quite sure that there were viable
Democratic candidates that could have beat Bush without trying
to out-Bush Bush.

The "Anybody But Bush" strategy played well to the BDS sufferers but
didn't give them anything to stand for when it came to people who wanted
to hear specifics about a positive agenda. So they were basically stuck
with trying to outdo the Republicans on the Reps' own platform.
