It is a rain-slicked night in one of Philadelphia's rougher
neighbourhoods when the congregants of the Nazareth Baptist church
gather to say a prayer for their mayor. "God bless John Street, and
everything that his hands touch," the reverend says. The worshippers
put their hands forward and the mayor, smiling with closed eyes,
accepts the benediction.

As 2004 Nears, President's Policies on Iraq, Economy Divide Voters
By David S. Broder and Dan Balz, Page A01
Two years after a surge of national unity in the wake of the terrorist
attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, the United States is once again a 50-50
nation, shaped by partisan divisions as deep as ever that stand
between President Bush and reelection.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Robert Caro, biographer of Lyndon B. Johnson,
delivered the annual Theodore H. White lecture last week at Harvard's
Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy, so
it was inevitable that the panel following his talk was confronted
with a question about the comparison between Johnson's experience with
Vietnam and President Bush's travails in Iraq.
