Playing a board game with friends one evening recently, we all had to
think of an article of clothing starting with the letter H. My partner
and I came up with something lame like "hat" and "halterneck". One of
our friends said "harness". We challenged him, arguing that harnesses
were for reindeer, children and dogs. "Go to any leather bar in
Manhattan and you'll find people wearing them," he said. His boyfriend
backed him up. And as our ignorance became plain they looked at us as
with faux incredulity, as though two straight ingenues had just blown
in with Dorothy on the last tornado from Kansas.
