Sonia Gandhi's renunciation of the premiership when it was within her
grasp is the second shock of an Indian election which no one - herself
included - had expected would put her in a position even to dream of
doing so. Venomous hostility by the extreme Hindu nationalists and the
negative reaction of the stock exchange could have been anticipated
but, however deplorable the prejudices of the ruling and business
elites, they do not appear to have been the decisive factor in
prompting her to say no. Mrs Gandhi won an election she did not expect
to win - or rather that she hoped to win in another five years' time,
at best. From the moment this became obvious last week she had to
grapple with a different and more complicated scenario.
