From The Economist print edition
THE first nine chapters of this book are a lucid and engaging romp
through the first 3.5 billion years of South African history, from
blue-green algae to Nelson Mandela's release from jail in 1990. But it
is the last chapter that really makes the book worth buying. R.W.
Johnson is a historian, but also a polemical journalist, and he writes
with most passion about the present.
