Israel kept a stern official silence last night in the face of reports
that Russia was on the brink of selling Syria sophisticated missiles in
the biggest arms deal between the two countries for 15 years.
The reports were the most plausible explanation yet for what had seemed
to be a mysterious mood of crisis in relations between Russia and
Israel in the preparations for a three-day visit to Moscow this month
by the Syrian President, Bashar Assad.
