OT: The dwindling middle class |

Take a look at Mexico. That's what the US will look like with 20-30 more
years of neocon rule.

I've never been able to figure out what a middle class is. I thought maybe a
bunch of bandits?

Yip, it confuses me to.
They go to work...therefore they are working class.
End of story.

'Realism is seductive because once you have accepted the reasonable
notion that you should base your actions on reality, you are too often
led to accept, without much questioning, someone else's version of what
that reality is. It is a crucial act of independent thinking to be
skeptical of someone else's description of reality.'-

Nonsense. There will always be short lived fluctuations but there are
feedback mechanisms in place that makes sure there will be a middle
class. A loss of middle class (to either lower or upper class)
represents a loss of market (and some production) and revenue for the
upper class, which will self regulate, naturally demoting lower upper
class to middle class and/or a change in price adjustment and market
targeting whence upper lower class becomes the new middle class.
Let's say Joe Middleclass cannot find a house in his price range. What
does this mean? It means there is more demand than supply and/or Joe
Middleclass is aiming too high. Maybe he should shop for an apartment
instead. Maybe middle class has gotten too rich for their own good and
too many of the middle class can afford higher priced houses. Whatever
the case, John Upperclass will see the opportunity in the market and
build more houses to capitalize on the demand. There may be a delay of
several years until John's new houses fill the demand but if there is
money to be made, you can bet somebody's on it.

"The down payment used to be the issue, but the problem now is that
housing prices have climbed so quickly that a lot of consumers are
struggling to make their payments affordable," said David Dworkin, vice
president for community lending partnerships.
Wages need some time to catch up, otherwise the demand will drop, bringing
the prices with it. The minimum wage is a joke. I remember $1.65 an hour
vs. .29 per gallon for gas when I started driving. 32 years later, gas
prices are ten times what they were, but the minimum wage is not $16.50
per hour.
Our illustrious Hollywood Musicians Union negotiated a great deal for our
new contract in August. No raises across the board. Which means I have
to get rid of about 5% of my family to maintain the same standard of
living. Sweet.

Quoting myself from 2003:
Communism was labelled as the "20th century experiment
that failed". What the wealthy want is for the middle
class to be second experiment to fail. They want a
return to the European middle ages and industrial age,
a time when there were two classes, the wealthy and the
poor. Those with wealth ruled, and those without could
do nothing to improve their situation.
