The headline: Militiamen Control Two Iraqi Cities

is "The mission is going particularly well. We made inroads into
the city and we are driving the enemy resistance back," said Marine
Lt. Col. Greg Olsen. "We're winning every firefight."
We'll take all the cities but Najaf back and destroy the Mahdi Army,
then let the senior Shi'ite clerics deal with Al Sadr.
We will do that only by declaring that we have done it after using
massive force to "free" the citizens. It will not be safe for
Americans to be on those streets.
We just did take Kut back.
NPR reports that the people hide when the US Army comes by and sits on
the porches when their people drive by.
Which people? Not the Kurds, and not the Shia in the south, not even in
places where Al-Sadr's thugs have "taken control" until we take it back.
The people don't want the freedom to do exactly what the men with the
tanks and gunships tell them to do.
Which people? Why aren't the rest of the Shi'ite militias out in force?
If al-Sistani issued a call for Jihad, we'd be in the soup. As it is,
this hothead al-Sadr with his Iranian connections is the one who is
holed up in their holy city, making irresponsible threats and trying to
win by intimidation. He is *not* well liked, especially by the more
senior Shi'ite leaders, particularly al-Sistani himself.
