The career of King Norodom Sihanouk of Cambodia has been a bewildering
trail of political twists and expedient turns. Now the man they call
the 'mercurial monarch' has announced his abdication. Jan McGirk

When Norodom Sihanouk took the Cambodian throne six decades ago he
presided over a country largely unchanged since the ancient Khmer era.
The young man installed as a wastrel prince by the French in 1941 went
on to champion independence, weather the Vietnam War and survive the
Killing Fields to earn himself the tag of the "mercurial monarch". Now
the great survivor has stunned his nation by abdicating, and in a sign
of the changing times his departure was delivered not in his
characteristic high-pitched voice but with a bitter missive posted on
his personal website.
