Object: OT: The machine saga.
You know, this is getting really annoying.... But still I have a
temporary fix for my hanging machine.
Took a spare computer and popped the primary HDD from the dead machine
into it, then connected up the data disks from the RAID sub subsystem
using the original box to power them.
Seems to work fine, even if it's a bit unaesthetic to look at.
So you'll be glad to know my posts no longer originate from the icky
bathroom laptop.
Still, it was a really strange problem that I figure must be a
motherboard fault. Oh well, can't be bothered to check that out
because it usually takes forever to pin it down, and then you can't do
anything about it anyway, so I'll be off to buy a new motherboard
later and help reinflate the economy.
ATX format. Athlon XP 2300+ processor. Suggestions anyone? Or would I
be better off with a new processor as well?

I would definitely go for one of the sleek, sexy "Alienware" models if
I could. Top-of-the-line at _any_ processor speed, imho. :-)

Piffle. Look at MaximumPC's dream machine 05. Dual everthing and once you've
tried two monitors you'll never go back.

Two monitors are nice, but I think I'd prefer a widescreen. I've never
been able to get used to the gap in between the screens.

I've not had a problem. I have a new 19 inch LCD and an older 20 inch CRT.
That gives me a horizontal distance of 29.5 inches
On a freshly opened Excel spread sheet that's A to AK. It would be more but
the CRT is at a slightly lower resolution.

Pfeh. You sound like a typical breeder, always thinking in pairs. I
prefer one really, really LONG monitor. Preserves continuity. ;-)

WTF is a "bathroom laptop"? My laptop can be used in any room of the
house!

Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe. An Athlon XP 2300+ is a respectable CPU. I wouldn't
change it unless you need more power. AMD recommends use of a phase
change thermal compound between the CPU and heatsink. Some people say
that paste works fine. If you want the phase change stuff, it can be hard
to find.
