Over the past week, President Bush and Vice President Cheney have

designed to tarnish his credentials as a possible commander in chief.
But the orchestrated attacks also revealed the president's
vulnerabilities on the issue that continues to shape the presidential

Wow, that's very scary. Why isn't there more outrage about all the
bad things Republicans do? The whole Clinton marital infidelity thing
was turned into a media circus, but when thousands of voters are
systematically disenfranchised and hundreds die and billions are spent

claiming that the media is liberal is out of their mind.

Maybe because all those charges don't hold up under any level of
scrutiny. In fact they've all had their runs of publicity but then
fallen apart once they were thoroughly investigated.

I agree with Vanessa Williams ["Black Like Whom?" op-ed, Aug. 5]
that racial stereotyping must be fought, not least in media
organizations. I've devoted a great part of my 20-year career to doing
just that, as a reporter, author and editor. In my New York Times
article on Barack Obama -- the subject of Ms. Williams's attack -- I
tried to look precisely at the ways in which Mr. Obama undermines
stereotypes, mocks them, is harmed by them and may turn them to his
advantage.

re-importation program.

This summer marks the third anniversary of President Bush's

years, the subject has become a polarizing flash point for American
politics and a focal point for the presidential campaign. For many of
Sen. John Kerry's supporters, the Bush administration's stem cell
policy is a leading symbol of everything that is wrong with the
current domestic agenda. For Bush supporters, his stance on stem cells
is a leading symbol of all that is right.

On Election Day it will not matter to some 4.7 million Americans
whether they are Republicans, Democrats, independents or whether they
have an opinion on anything at all. Under various state laws, they are
barred from voting because they have felony records. This includes not
just prison inmates (48 states), parolees (33 states) and probationers
(29 states) but also a large number of people -- one third of the
disenfranchised in all -- who are off parole and "free." Minorities
are hit particularly hard by these state laws: They deny 13 percent of
African American men the vote.
