Gen. John Abizaid probably commands the most potent military force in
history. The troops of his Central Command are arrayed across the
jagged crescent of the Middle East, from Egypt to Pakistan, in an
overwhelming projection of U.S. power. He travels with his own
mini-government: a top State Department officer to manage diplomacy; a
senior CIA officer to oversee intelligence; a retinue of generals and
admirals to supervise operations and logistics. If there is a modern
Imperium Americanum, Abizaid is its field general.

Mental and Physical Ailments Deserve Equal Health Care Coverage
By Allen Lebovits, Page A29
A recently released medical study confirms that poor mental health and
stress can cause us to age more quickly and get sick faster -- that
there are actually molecular changes in the body when we are stressed.
This probably isn't surprising to most people. Mental health
professionals, through their experiences with patients, have long known
that the mind plays a major role in the health of the body. But the
landmark study published this month in the Proceedings of the National
Academy of Sciences solidifies it.

We are undergoing a profound economic transformation that is barely
recognized. This quiet upheaval does not originate in some breathtaking
technology but rather in the fading power of forces that have shaped
American prosperity for decades and, in some cases, since World War II.
As their influence diminishes, the economy will depend increasingly on
new patterns of spending and investment that are still only dimly
apparent. It is unclear whether these will deliver superior increases
in living standards and personal security. What is clear is that the
old economic order is passing.

IN MILITARY TERMS, Europe's contribution to the war on terrorism has
been modest. More than once its diplomats have worked at cross-purposes
with those of the Bush administration. There is reason to doubt whether
most Europeans really understand the threat of Islamic extremism or
agree with Americans that an overarching, generational commitment must
be made to defeating it. Yet this month the European Union launched an
initiative that eventually may contribute as much to overcoming Muslim
militants as anything the United States has done since Sept. 11, 2001.
It agreed to begin formal membership negotiations with Turkey, a
country of about 70 million Muslims that in more ways than one serves
as a bridge between Europe and the Middle East. If the talks progress
successfully, both Europe and Turkey will be positively transformed --
and the "clash of civilizations" between the West and Islam sought by
ideologues such as Osama bin Laden will be far less likely.

Somewhere in the U.S. government is the person who came up with the
idea of fusing the wail of an infant with an incessant meow from a cat

ordinary American culture can, with repeated exposure, be nearly
lethal. God help us all.

During the past eight months there have been many news cycles, many
front-page stories, many events. There have been elections. There have
been hurricanes and tidal waves. Nevertheless, in the grand scheme of
things, eight months is not a very long time. In most of the world,
something that happened eight months ago is considered "recent." In
Washington, however, it seems that eight months ago is considered
"ancient." How else to explain the nomination of Alberto Gonzales to
the post of attorney general of the United States?

much. As almost everyone knows, and as the Beatles once sang, money

The debate among congressional Democrats is not about whether they

scheme that even moderate Democrats view with skepticism.

President Bush has waded into two big domestic policy arguments: Social
Security reform and the overhaul of the tort system. On the first
issue, he should tread gently. Social Security needs to be shored up,
but it's fundamentally a good program. On the second issue, an
elephantine trampling would be kind. The tort system is an abomination.
