Feb. 27 - Jim Swire's 23-year-old daughter Flora was on board Pan Am
flight 103 when a bomb blew it out of the sky above Lockerbie,
Scotland, now more than 15 years ago. In all, 270 people were killed
in that terrorist atrocity, one of the worst ever seen before
September 11. Since then, Swire has been a leading voice among the
British victims' families clamoring for truth and justice. But Jim
Swire says he's found neither.

Afterwards, there were several in-depth investigative programs on
British TV.
The general conclusions were that:
-the Iranians contracted a Palestinian bomb-maker to build the bomb as
a response to the USS Vincennes downing a civilian airliner (but that
was OK, it was a mistake)
-relationship between Iran and the US improved
-the bomb was on the "open market" in the Middle East for a while
-Lybia bought it to respond to US bombing of Tripol that killed
Ghadaffis daughter.
-the US bombing of Tripoli was "justified" as a response to athe
blowing up of a US serviceman's bar in Germany. Reagan said he had
incontrovertible evidence.
-the same bomb-in-the-bar had been used to "justify" action against
Syria 6 months earlier, when Reagan also had "incontrovertible
evidence"
These things never happen in a vacuum even though the things we do are
always "justified retaliation/punishment/etc" and the other guy's are
"unjustified acts or terror against the good guys who would never do
that sort of thing ourselves".
If Reagan was right the first time and it was Syria behind the bar
bomb then it wasn't Lybia. If he was right the second time then it
wasn't Syria.
Either way it created enemies with a reason to hate the US for what
they had done. Just as the Vincennes incident had.
When you go after people you have to make damned certain it's the
right ones, and you limit the damage to the same right ones.
