I've noticed that damn scream independently. :-) It's a good scream.
I also remember there were these old westerns that used a weird gunshot
sound effect. It had a screech of metal that segued into the boom. I think
it might have been Sergio Leone in some of his spaghetti westerns.

They way over used the ricochet. Sometimes every shot in a
gum battle ricocheted. Paa-waou. Like bouncing bullets off
heavy sheet metal.

The ricochet has a specific use. It indicates that the shot was close,
because it hit whatever the person was hiding behind (usually when the
person runs behind a rock just as the gun goes off). BTW, I've heard
shots rocochet, and they do sound exactly like that. You shouldn't hear
a ricochet unless the bullet hits a rock or brick, though. They don't
ricochet off wood.

My movie-freak friend and I have a love-hate relationship with the Wilhelm.
While I can see it as an in-joke among sound guys, it's kind of irritating
to hear it in, say, "Lord of the Rings" when an Elf falls off a wall at
Helm's Deep. In the mix, that scream's way out in front of the other
sounds.
Still...hearing it on an episode of "Family Guy" was awesome!

Gad, you're psychic. I had included a complaint about that stupid part,
too, but took it out. I saw an interview with Jackson and he said that
was thrown in because Bloom had become so popular by that time, even
though his acting sucks to the point he'd have trouble conveying "down"
by falling off a cliff.
The scream was reused during the oliphant charge, too. Ugh.

How about the drinking contest at the beginning of "Return of the King"?

I've been threatening my movie-freak friend that I intend to make a movie
using nothing but cliche sound effects. Every scream a Wilhelm. Every
gunshot a ricochet. =D
