OT: There are no atheists in hurricane shelters. |
Well, at least not this one!
I'm staying home.
Well, kids, looks like this one's gonna be close. I think it's going
to miss, I live in Mobile, AL. I like it here, but it truly is the
open zipper to the bible belt. They have two sections in the
restaurants, "christian" and "hell bound sinner" ba-doom-DOOM... but
seriously folks...
Unfortunately, it looks like Doc Smartass will get a better view.
(Take care buddy. Let us know asap how things went.)
Unlike most Xtians, I don't pray that the hurricane goes and kills
someone else, then praise "Him" when it does. No matter how it goes
there will be at least a thousand miles of coastline that will praise
jebus. Some for sparing them, some for sparing their house, some for
not calling a loved one "home," some for calling a loved one "home."
The rest...well, it was just God's will.
Me, I'll be praying to Christopher Walken for the storm to just peter
out and not hurt anyone else. On the other hand, if Ivan remains a
*****, and it probably will...then, well, it was Christopher
Walken's will. Call him if you have any problems. At least he really
exists.
But seriously, I don't know where most of you live, but if you're in
Ivan's strike zone take care, take precautions. Yes that goes for
everyone... atheist, theist, agnostic, confused, whatever. (No trolls
though...you guys go stand on the beach and watch
for...err...the...triumphant return of the....err....something) This
one looks nasty. I've been through several hurricanes (starting with
Camille, I was at "ground zero" for that one) and I have developed a
sense of when to be concerned. I'm there. It's an easy formula...at
about 110-120 mph I get concerned.
I expect my power to go out. Hell's bells it goes out when it gets too
foggy in this little subdivision. But I'll be hanging in there til the
bitter end, just being that lovable rapscallion that
I am.
So load up on your batteries, spam, bottled water, gasoline, spam,
candles, propane, spam, spam, plywood, tape, spam, spam, spam, medical
supplies, chainsaws, spam, spam, generators, alcohol, spam, spam, spam,
spam........
(Jeeze, just saw the news...we're toast! Wet toast. Christopher
Walken...why have you forsaken meeeee?)
Take care y'all.

Maybe you can 'splain to me why all these Floridians wait till the last
minute to buy plywood. Seems like if you have a home or a business in
Florida, you would pretty much want to have your plywood ready before the
hurricane season starts. You know it's coming, why stand in a 3 mile long
line the day before it hits?
Or even better, why not build storm protection into the structure as you're
building it?

Many do. Some near the coast even have roll down shutters, or
corrugated metal sheets, ready to install. Of course it makes for
better television to send a camera to Home Depot to film people
waiting in line to buy plywood. After the storm they look for lines
for water, ice or gasoline. I've never been in a line for water or ice
or gasoline. Why? We know better! Many in the lines will be newbies!
And for the record, rarely do you get more than a two day warning.
Believe me, those waiting in line are waiting for resupply. I've been
through these things, you can't board up the house every time a storm
threatens, and do you want 10-20 sheets of plywood sitting around the
house for 10-20 years...just in case?
Or even better, why not build storm protection into the structure as you're
building it?
They do and they can put in more(codes require a certain amount.) But
protection costs money. Do you want to pay 10-20% more for your
house...just in case?
I'm just sayin'. I live in Mobile. The last major hurricane was 25
years ago.The big ones may only hit a certain area on the gulf coast
every 20+ years. It really isn't something we think about every day.
Wish me luck! ...errr, I may need it! And I'm not waiting in line fer
nuthin!!!!

I hear ya. One of the last ones, I sat on the front porch with a
friend at her parents' house drinking irish coffee (we made coffee,
put it in a big thermos.) The wind was coming from behind so we were
watching the proceedings from within the "slipstream." Fun, I'm
tellin' ya. I've got vodka this time...guess it was some sort of
"Ivan" thing. I've got candles, batteries, water, radio, magazines,
books, spam, a dog, ammunition....sooo, I'm all set.
As long as we're going to hit, I hope we get the eye, I love the eye.
Ivan would be my fourth. I'll be out on my bicycle during the eye. Too
bad it looks like it will be at night. I'd love to take some photos.
They always seem to show up at night. "Elena" was during the day but I
wasn't into photography yet, but I went out during the eye. The sky
was actually clear and blue. I guess I'll only see stars for this one.
I'll have paper and pen available and will report in when I can.
"Mr. Ivan, Bring it On! ... *****"
(Hey I wonder if we'll ever get a Hurricane Jesus as in "hay-soos" I
wouldn't count on it.. It *is* a popular name in the region. I can't
imagine God would let Jesus kill anyone so the christers wouldn't want
to risk it. That might be disastrous to their bottom line.)
