current member states means the path of integration is unlikely to be

It would be an exaggeration to say that millions of people were
watching intently at the weekend when the people of Latvia decided to
join the EU.
However, the overwhelming pro-EU choice made by this small Baltic
country closes one painful chapter, opening another of enormous
importance for the entire continent.
