Wasting some time this morning on the Google video page (think I got there
because of some computer news article or something equally inane). But
stumbled over a video of "cross wind testing" of Boeing jets.
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2581413167561676027&pl=true
Yeesh. A couple of them look like they're going totally sideways. I'm
impressed they can get them on the ground at all like this.
Oh, one more. This is actually some marketing site nonsense or other but
it's *funny. Kinda violent. PG-13ish.

I'd be lot less hostile to marketing people if they made more stuff like

(Well, not "like this" because those morons would think that means
"brainless copy this" but "like this" in the sense of some actual

Thanks for the link. I have a private pilot's license and have had my
share of crosswind landings. They're not easy. What the pilots in the
video are using is a method called 'crab angle' or crabbing it,
pointing the nose into the wind to prevent drift until the very last
moment before straightening it out.
In small planes like the one I fly, Bellanca Super Decathlon, we use a
method called 'side slip' which is to bank into the wind with opposite
rudder to keep the plane's nose pointed towards the runway. You end up
landing on one wheel. You keep the plane banked into the wind until
the plane slows down enough for the wings to stop producing lift and
the other wheel touches down.
Worst kind of crosswind landings is when the winds are gusty and
squirrelly (keeps changing direction). At that point, as I like to
say, you don't land the plane you wrestle it to the ground. :)

Ah, more data to add to my fear of flying. <g>
I just can't get on one of those things anymore. Some primal part of me
has become utterly convinced "big metal thing can't fly, it fall out of
sky!" Though I have an excuse. I wasn't the least bit bothered by flying
until the Cerritos disaster. There was this one picture some guy took from
his front yard of that AeroMex jet, upside down, heading for the ground.
And I was living, at the time, in a city right next door to Cerritos. If
I'd been home (I think I was at work) when the crash happened, I would
have heard it. Hell, maybe seen it.
And I have two weird little phobias. A mild claustrophobia that isn't
severe like people who freak out over MRIs but I guess is more a fear of
being "trapped" in a small space (so help me, I have a *lot of weird
dreams about elevators <g>). The big one is *falling. I can't do roller
coasters or any other such thing that "drops" you. I flat freak out. Can't
control it in the least. Can't be the least bit rational about. *Nothing
stops the panic attack. I can almost feel the gibbering chimp inside
running around, arms in the air, shrieking. <g>
So, soon as "plane" and "fall" got linked... oh boy.
Last time I flew was 1987. Twenty years next year. Yeesh! Anyway, not long
ago, I was starting to think about one of those "desensitizing" programs
as I was getting irritated at myself over the phobia. I mean it's not the
least bit rational, I don't have a clue where it comes from, and I
thought "really, this is silly."
So I was looking around for one of those programs and thinking about
trying a little to San Diego by some commuter line just to see how I'd
react (on a short flight and I could Amtrak back to the house easily
enough).
That was 2001.
(Boy do I have bad timing)

Well, when you are doing cross-wind testing you are going to be landing in
this configuration. I find it rather calming to see what these jets are
capable of handling when pushed to the limit.

Messy, but fun, LOTS of fun. I paper-jammed it several times, but did finally
quit after getting 88 copies in 2 minutes.
