Another drug war failure. Would it have ended up this way if drugs were
legal? I don't know, but I do know that it did end up this way when drugs
were illegal. Maybe legalization would make it easier for people to get help
if they need it.

I think she and so many others would have had much better odds if
drugs were legal.
Legalization would take the charisma out of drug use, the criminal
pushers out of the trade, and the lies of the DEA out of our schools
and society in general.
How can I say legalization would take the charisma out? Consider the
school age kids wanting to be "bad". Smoke tobacco? But, to be
really "bad" how about something illegal, getting a lot of glory on TV
and movies, pushers with $100,000.00 cars etc. And more and more kids
know that legal tobacco is more harmful than illegal pot, at least.
And they know from trying it, or being with people who do smoke it.
Not from what the teacher or the guest cop says. And you wonder why
they have a problem understanding things at this tender age?
If drugs had only the same attraction of a soft drink, a different
blend of coffee, a few beers, some wine or a few cocktails, we'd be
fine. Of course, they'd have to be legal to do this.
And I think parents might have an easier time talking to their kids,
provided they actually live up to the qualification of being a real
parent. (that can't be changed by law)

Did you know her? I have lots of clients with similar stories.
Some get into rehab, get job training and housing and make
it. Others, with the same help, don't. But, you can't give up
due to the ones that do make it and stay clean.

That's refreshing. Maine must have more methadone clinics per
capita than any other state in the union. The junkies from all
over come here for the handouts. When we lived in one of the
poorer sections, while we were saving to buy a house, the junkie
across the street was getting her apartment paid for, food
stamps, and then was flogging the methadone on the street to buy
heroin. Charming.

I did the usual for the 70s - Pot, schrooms, a little microdot, nothing too
drastic. The worst was the coke. I sure got skinny, but it pretty much
nearly killed me. Quitting was relatively easy.

I didn't know her but I have known a lot of people who got in when
they were young and "invincible" and had it ruin their lives.
Same with booze which I was a slave to for a lot of years.
My first thought, feeling really, was that I would have tried to help
her but then the reality set in and I realized that there would have
been nothing I could have done.
The story just triggered a lot of memories about other people I have
known.
