If, as poets and tribal lore would have us believe, man's life turns
full circle, then Anthony Sampson's memorial service in London
yesterday was aptly targeted.
It was situated next to the High Commission for South Africa, whose
government he spent so long at first fighting and then struggling to
bring into being as a new, black majority-ruled nation. And the service
itself took place in the church of St Martin-in-the-Fields next door,
the epitome of the British establishment for which he had made such a
reputation in exposing.
