The Guardian
Six herons, feathers puffed out to trap their body heat, punctuate the
Canadian marsh flats. Chief Kim Baird, or Kwuntiltunaat in her native
Salish, points to them from her office on the Tsawwassen First Nation
reserve. Further along, a bald eagle flushes out ducks and geese. The
ferry and container terminal ports loom in the middle distance. Beyond
it lies Georgia Strait, which separates Vancouver Island from the
British Columbia mainland.
