Question to the network savvy people:
Once, I plugged in a win95 and win98 machine into a hub, and plugged
the hub into the DSL modem, using the "uplink" button for that jack. I
was able to go online with both computers, each online with it's own
IP address. I could also communicate from computer to computer.
Network experts didn't believe me but I swear I did do it.
Since then, I got rid of the win95 box, bought this XP box, and did
interconnect sharing correctly: connecting the motherboard RJ45 of the
XP box to the DSL modem and installing a Netgear FA311/312 card in the
XP box to connect the win98 box. I still used the hub to connect the
98 and XP boxes, only because it was there and I liked flashing
lights. (now I have a crossover cable to the win98 - it works and not
part of the question)
Now the real q: I moved, and now I have this XP box plugged into the
hub, along with my Dad's XP box, with the uplink jack connected to his
DSL modem, which is the same make and model mine is.(Only his DSL
modem is in use - I'm not bridging on the phone line side w/2 modems)
Only one computer can connect at a time. The other one says
"connecting..." but times out - nothing like multiple connections not
allowed or such.
I'm thinking XP's PPPoE has some setting that inhibits or allows this,
but I can't find it.
Any ideas?
I could accept "buy a DSL router" but I'd like to know why.
Thanks in advance.
