The British government last night became the largest national donor to
the tsunami disaster relief fund as the death toll leapt yet again to
more than 125,000 and the UN secretary general, Kofi Annan, warned the
crisis demanded an "unprecedented" global effort.
Britain tripled its aid to =A350m following a massive and speedy
response from members of the public whose donations to humanitarian
charities threatened to dwarf the government's initial offer.
