What makes this case particularly disturbing to me is that I have a
niece who was born with similar brain damage and is in essentially the
same state. She wasn't expected to live until the age of 5; she's 14
now. She just got put on a feeding tube a few months ago because she
can't swallow, not even water and pureed food, and she developed
pneumonia from inhaling too much food.
Of course, the big difference is that my niece has always been this way,
whereas Terri used to be a "whole" person.

Can you imagine the guts it took for him to make this ruling?
You don't (usually) get to be a Federal judge by being either
stupid or politically naive. He HAS to have known what decision
the Republicans in Congress were expecting him to make, and
that he will now be anathema to many of the politically powerful,
but he had the courage to make the call according to the actual
facts and the relevant law.
I know that Federal judges have lifetime appointments, which
provides
him with protection most people don't have, but still...a gutsy
decision.
Best, Marc

Men like this are the last hope of the United States Constitution. We
won't be seeing more like him appointed for a few years.

Well, unlike the Legislative and Executive Branches, the Judicial Branch
is obliged to at least act like it cares about the law, otherwise they may
as well not come to work in the morning.
