'Private Lives in Renaissance Venice': Behind the Facade
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/12/05/books/review/05BOUCHER.html
By BRUCE BOUCHER
Published: December 5, 2004
LONG before Napoleon extinguished it in 1797, the Venetian Republic
gloried in its role as one of the wonders of Europe. Venerable
edifices, like the Church of St. Mark and the Doge's Palace, embodied
Venice as heir to the eastern Roman Empire. And the city seemed to
defy belief, its palaces apparently floating on the Adriatic, its
streets and squares a magnificent stage set proclaiming the luxury and
splendor of ''la Serenissima,'' the most serene republic.
