OT: What is this mechancial object |
http://members.ispwest.com/raymond79/object/
I'm posting this in hopes someone will be able to tell me just what the
heck I've got here. It's very heavy for its size, and so far I've only
been able to remove the plates on one side so I'm not sure how the gears
work together or anything. Since it's such a distinctive item, I'm
hoping it can be identified just from these photos without my having to
take it completely apart.
Any thoughts?

Where did you get it? :)
You might never know what it was made for. I'm told by people who work
in small machine shops that parts for large secret projects are farmed
out to many small shops - that way, nobody has an idea what each one
is for, but they get a large amount of money for turning out
assemblies that do what the specification says.
In 1970 I wired circuit boards for a small engineering firm, I was
given the instructions of which pins to connect to which - but all
they told me was that it was for the Navy, and would NOT give a hint
what they did. They even made their own chips there. It was a hard
place to find. You'd never know what was there from the street. They
are big on Wall Street now.
So, you own a part of a submarine, bomb, hot-dog cooker, photocopier,
nuke, egg timer, jet engine, mousetrap, steeple clock, cow milker,
disk drive, telescope, satellite, some strange artist's part of a
mobile or sculpture, the drive for a rotating restaurant, carnival
ride, studio prop or some project that went nowhere. Or a novel
paperweight. :)
Put it on e-bay. See if someone offers a tremendous amount and is
willing to pick it up secretly. Demand cash. Transfer the cash into
your own suitcase - (no GPS).

It is one of my dad's mystical garage thingies. He passed away
recently and I inherited the house but before that I helped him clear
out some of the stuff in the garage, and that included the insides of an
old 50's pinball machine, some left over parts from his time in the army
when he was in radar school, and a whole slew of things he brought home
from the R&D lab where he worked for 35 years starting in the early
60's.
This thing came from a box I hadn't gone through before. The quality
of this item makes me think it has to be from the lab. I found it
stored with things like meters, gauges and a neat set up involving a
hollow steel box with four lenses in rotating frames.

That's a thought. In the 60's and 70's, Dad and his lab partners not
only had to devise experiments, they had to design the machinery and
build and program the computers. It may have been a one-shot thing.
Put it on e-bay. See if someone offers a tremendous amount and is

This sounds like it may be right. The screws are so tight I won't be
able to remove them without damage unless I'm very careful, and I don't
want to be diverted from another project when I'm so very close to
finishing it, so I can't check for a few days. With the six tiny screws
I could easily remove, little bars riding on ball bearing come out by a
small amount when the screw on top is moved, and that's connected
somehow to the sweep arm on one side.

You might try rec.crafts.metalworking. Those guys can identify
anything. They have regular contests to try to stump each other. It's
rare when a device can't be ID'd.

No idea what it is, sorry.
Any thoughts?
For god's sake don't let Osama get his hands on that.
Did we ever find out what it is? I showed that picture to my husband and
he's been asking me every freakin' day if we know what it is yet :P
Not yet. Tonight I expect to get our local atheist's group new web
site up, which is the project I didn't want to be diverted from.
Assuming all goes well, I can start working on it Monday. It's making
me nuts, too, mainly because it's so heavy for its size.

Just as a wild-assed guess - and I am not a locksmith...
Could it be a door lock from a wall safe or bank safe?
The four bolt holes in side 2 could hold a faceplate,
the slots would hold it precisely & securely in the door
frame. The large cam could be the lever to open it. The
small cam on top could be the dial for the combination.
The bolt holes on the bottom would allow it to be
removed for servicing.

There's an idea. If Ms. Raymond were to take it to a locksmith and
ask... If nothing else they might be able to steer her to a place
that probably could answer her query.

Oh, no, I'm having too much fun guessing. That's why I posted a link
to photos here. It would have been neat if someone actually knew what
it is, but the guesses are very enlightening, and those who are
explaining why they're guessing this or that are helping me learn how to
analyze something like this.

Don't worry... he's hiding in some forest somewhere...eating dirt and
grass roots, and ended up much worse than what he started with.
Sure...he thought he had a cunning and clever plan...but in the end,
he learned that he's a loser....the hard way.

Well, there was nothing radioactive inside this item, as one silly
person proposed *rolls eyes*, but what's weird is there is *nothing*
inside. It's like the whole thing exists for no other purpose than to
take a lot of energy and reduce it to a fraction of the amount.
The whole 5 lb. weight of the item is from the casing; the 6 gears
inside can't possibly be more than a few ounces. Here is a photo of the
insides, plus what a little experimenting discovered:
http://members.ispwest.com/raymond79/object/inside.htm
And for another off topic observation, after a very stressful few
weeks peanut butter filled chocolate cream cheese tassies frosted with
white chocolate are pretty darn relaxing, at least as good as slathering
hot caramel over cinnamon shortbread and topping it with melted milk
chocolate.

And what about the AIR?
Did you check the air that the device contained? With a geiger counter?
At this very moment, a dangerous amount of krypton-85 gas is probably
wafting about your apartment, doing who knows what to yer genetic
structure. And you sit there quietly mutating into some strange creature
as you blithely tinker with things Man was not meant to disturb.
You scare me.
But anyway, it's obviously some sort of simple two-speed transmission. I
still haven't a clue as to what it connects to, though.
