OT: What news service? |
This is getting annoying. I will post something and no one responds.
Someone will post the same thing *six hours latter*, and everyone jumps
on board that thread.
Assuming that I am not killfiled by everyone in aa (and every other
group to which I post), I will blame my news service, Giganews. I'd like
to switch to a different one, one with less lag time between post and
appearance. Suggestions?

I see you (like now) but not every day.

That is the problem, I do most pretty much every day. And it is not just
alt.atheism where I have a problem, either. Posts show up quickly in
Google Groups, but it seems that most people never read my stuff
in-group.
Call me egotistical, but I'd like to think I'm writing stuff that is
worth reading :-)

I would recommend newsfeeds.com, which has text-only and binary-only
newsservers, mixed newservers, and spamkiller-newservers. Here is a
list of their packages and servers:
http://www.newsfeeds.com/servers.htm
The "basic" package gives you 750 mb of binary downloads per day and
access to two text-only servers for $9.95 a month. I've been very happy
with them.

Why would anyone want to killfile you here? I've seen your
messages whenever my computer allows me into the
newsgroup. I've been having tons of trouble ever since I
signed up for McAfee's Privacy Service. It has me blocked
out of nearly all websites (including McAfee's!) and replaces
any kind of vulgarity or cursewords or even words like hell or
Satan with # signs in the newsgroup. It's really ridiculous.
And, I can't even locate it with Search/Folders. Every other
McAfee program shows up but not McAfee Privacy Service.
They must have it hidden under another name. I sent a
message to McAfee and am waiting to hear from them. I
simply want to uninstall this program.
I also have to wait for a very long time to sign onto the
computer and keep getting error message:user32.dll is
missing. Does anyone know how I can add this back on?

I keep the one in Germany as a "back up" now. It's free so it's worth
having around in case of connection problems (or during the move, it was
my only access).
On the other hand, they do have some posting limits and such. It's fairly
high but if you're very active, you may bump into them...

I'll second that. I switched to Giganews about nine months ago and

One approach to consider is farming your own.
By that I mean using a proxy server that collects articles from numerous remote
servers, then pools them and serves them to your news client. I currently download
simultaneously from half a dozen servers, all free. The proxy server I use is called
Hamster. Download at: http://www.tglsoft.de/misc/hamster_en.htm

Actually, that's the neo-con justification for lying to *everybody. See,
your "enemies" hear your public speeches. The ones you give to your own
people. And, since you don't want the "enemies" to know what's going on...

Angelico (I think that was her name) once posted something about this
german news server called news.cis.dfn.de.
The Free University of Berlin (who run the service) have changed the server name
to
news.individual.net
for private individuals, although the old name will still work.
Details at www.news.individual.net
You just have to go to their
web page (which has an english translation) and ask them to make you a
free account. It usually takes a couple days at most. I'll dig up more
detailed info for you if you want to go this route. I've had no
complaints and the posting time seems to be pretty much instantaneous.
They seem to have a pretty large selection of groups, though some binary,
warez and ebook groups are not carried.
It is a text only server and sensibly will bounce posts crossposted to obnoxious
newsgroups, like alt.flame.*****.
As someone else mentioned, I have never had any problem with it and posts
invariably appear in seconds.
Sorry, forgot to mention, it's free.
