What Price Education?
http://www.time.com/time/europe/magazine/article/0,13005,901031215-557015,00.html
University systems in England, France and Germany are cash-strapped,
so some governments are proposing tuition fees — and students are on
the march. Has no-cost higher education become a luxury Europe can't
afford?
By CHARLES P. WALLACE

last week, blasting whistles and shouting slogans and holding out
until they were dragged away by police. In London, students protested
in Parliament Square. And for weeks now in Paris, thousands of

banners and chanting "all together!" Europeans are used to seeing
students on the streets pushing for radical change, but these young
people want to preserve the status quo.

By SARAH LYALL
Europeans, led by Britain, are rethinking their long-held belief that
university education should be financed almost entirely by the state.
