OT: White House says medical pot is akin to Jim Crow |
SAN FRANCISCO -- California and other states that want to make
marijuana available to sick or dying patients are flouting federal
drug laws in much the same way that Southern states defied national
civil rights laws, a senior Bush administration lawyer said. - AP

What a bunch of hypocritical wankers Junior's taliban are. They
take this incredibly petty and vindictive attitude to adults who
choose to ingest certain relatively innocuous substances into their
own bodies, often for the relief of excruciating pain and
debilitating weakness due to loss of appetite. But they see no
problem with the devastation wrought by much more harmful substances
such as alcohol and tobacco, because these are multi-billion-dollar
industries.
I'd say a more accurate comparison for medical marijuana is with
those who flouted southern law by running underground railroads
so that slaves could escape to freedom.

Am I the only one who has read the 10th Amendment to the US
Constitution? It would seem that the Bush Administration (and, for that
matter, the Clinton, Bush and Reagan Administrations as well) never
bothered.

Aw shucks. Back then they used to call it "states rights". That meant
making negras ride in the back of the bus and outlawing abortion, sodomy,
sex toys, the teaching of evolution and drinking on sunday. But when it
comes to allowing licensed doctors who are legally permitted to prescribe
other controlled substances to actually write prescriptions for
marijuana, that's really crossing the line, apparently.

I researched a paper last year on drugs. Among other things, death from
drugs, as compared to deaths from alcohol and tobacco.
Tobacco deaths/year: 430,000
Alcohol deaths/year: 80,000
Drug deaths/year: 2,200 (2,000 of these from cocaine)
And drugs are too dangerous to be legal. Must be because there's no
drug lobby, like there is an alcohol lobby and tobacco lobby.

Actually, it's quite similar, although not in the way that they're
trying to claim: during the civil rights movement, the Federal
Government passed legislation to override repressive and unjust laws,
whereas today, the States are passing legislation to override
repressive and unjust laws. The hypocrisy of this administration is
matched only by its arrogance. Regime change in 2004!

In other news: Alcoholic beverages, responsible for the majority road
deaths, (domestic) violence and of unwanted children still widely
available.
They tried to outlaw alcohol in the 1920's, and it produced a minimal
decrease in the consumption of alcohol, and a huge increase in crime. The
identical situation exists today with regard to marijuana & cocaine use.
