OT: Windows Picture and Fax Viewer question |
Every time I click on a TIF file, my computer (XP Pro) freezes up for a few
seconds
while the preview loads up in the window to the left. How can I disable
this feature? Also, when browsing through a folder using the Windows
Picture and Fax Viewer, when a TIF file comes up, the computer freezes as
well. I want to find a way to make the Picture and Fax Viewer completely
ignore TIF files. If I can't figure something out, I'll have to rename
every TIF file on my computer to another extension and create the
associations for it, which is more trouble than I want to go through. There
has to be a way to disassociate TIF files from the Picture Viewer.
I asked this question in one of the XP groups, and the only response I got
was from one of our very own trolls, so I figured I'd ask here.

There has to be a way to disassociate TIF files from the Picture Viewer.
If you have any other picture application (PaintShop Pro, Picture
It, Photo Studio, etc) you can associate that with TIF files.
1. Run Explorer or My Computer.
2. Click Tools menu.
3. Click Folder Options.
4. Click File Types. (This may search for a few seconds.)
5. Scroll down the list to TIF.*
6. Click on TIF.
7. Click Change.
8. Select a picture application or browse for the EXE that runs one.
*If TIF is not on the File Types list, you can add it by clicking New.
The application you pick should then run when you double
click on a TIF.
You still might have some problem in you computer however. Looking
at a file should not cause a freeze.

I alreadt did that, but the problem is that Windows Explorer likes to load a
preview of the file in the pane to the left. Also, I have folders with TIFs
along with JPGs, GIFs, and BMPs and I like to open Picture/Fax Viewer and
scroll through the pictures. It always hangs when it gets to a TIF file.
It's not a major problem, more like a pain in the *****.

Not sure if XP is the same but in Win2K from Windows Explorer you select
Tools/Folder Options/File Types (tab) then scroll down the list and
select TIF and then click the Advanced button. You should see 'preview'
as one of the available actions. Select preview and click the remove
button.

The Windows Picture and Fax Viewer is the
shimgvw.dll file in the System32 folder. Maybe it's
corrupted. You can download this file from:
http://dll.yaroslavl.ru/
Save it before replacing! The file that this
site offers is an older version than the one on my
system.

Megaview, a commercial pgrm, handles TIF files with no problem.
