Before my workplace put my workstation behind a firewall router,
I used to have network monitoring software perpetually running
in the background, recording unsolicited traffic coming to my
workstation from off-capmus. I wanted to see what the world
was trying to do to me. "Recreational paranoia" I called it.
The reason it was only recreational was that most incoming traffic
was either trying to exploit MS Windows security vulnerabilities,
and I was running SunOS, or it was trying to deliver spam, and
I had configured my workstation not to receive email.
The screen shots at the URL you give, showing traffic arriving
at Richard Compton's computer, leave out too much important
information. For example, they don't show whether the incoming
traffic is UDP or TCP and they don't show the port number on
Compton's computer that the remote site was sending to. That would
give us a hint as to the purpose of the incoming traffic from
United Nations Development Program, DoD Network Information Center,
and Halliburton.
Computers at large companies and government agencies -- yes, even
the Department of Defense -- have been broken into by hackers
and/or spammers who then used them to send spam or search for
more machines with exploitable security vulnerabilities. If the
incoming traffic from big US Government angencies and Halliburton
is using the same protocol and port number as the random hits
from China and Brazil, it is not a sign of anything other than
the fact that the people in charge of your national security
can't secure their computers... Sleep well tonight.

I know, the worst part of it is that the alternatives to "they're up to
something" are something I'd rather not think about right now...
