OT: You "own" a cat? Good News & Bad News. |
Reported in the Daily Mail (London, right wing, mostly daft but alas,
I read it). Please bear in mind that whenever a newspaper headline
asks a question, the answer is invariable "no".
<q2uote>
"Can owning a cat turn you into a sex kitten?"
I'm too ill (whine!) to take the time to OCR it, but you can find the
original article at
http://www.video2cd.co.uk/special/cats.gif (220k).

I looked up Toxoplasma Gondii on the net, so far I haven't seen anything
that indicates that it affects behaviour. This is a good page on it:
http://www.greatpets.com/home/cats/health/illnesses/toxoplasmosis
Quote: " It should be understood that the risk of humans becoming infected
with Toxoplasma from living with a cat is very small." - that article from
the Daily Mail you posted seems to suggest that it's pretty common.
Also, it's strange that I've visited 3 sites so far on the subject and none
of them have mentioned changes in behavior, because again according to the
Daily Mail article "The parasite has evolved to make it's host animal more
reckless, more aggressive, less scared of new things, and less adherent to
established behaviour patterns"
You'd think that would be listed among the symptoms, but the biggest list of
symptomes I've seen so far only list: "anorexia, weight loss, lethargy,
difficulty breathing (because of pneumonia), eye inflammation, and fever.
Other symptoms are vomiting and diarrhea, neurological symptoms, swollen
lymph nodes, and jaundice."
Seems strange if the parasite has evolved specifically to make it's host
animal act differently that it hasn't been noticed that well.

Well, it's apparently new research. Usually the Mail lifts science
stuff from the New Scientist, but I couldn't find a ref there (new
issue out tomorrow, iirc) Still, maybe it's a case of life following
art: there are any number of sci-fi stories where parasites modify
human behaviour to their own ends, in this instance doubtless
themselves under the control of the evil cat king.
