WASHINGTON - As long as 140 years ago, writer Jules Verne, one of the
originators of the science fiction genre, dreamed of sailing through outer
space. This month, his vision could become reality.
On June 21, the first-ever space sailing craft, “Cosmos 1”, is to be
launched. The privately-funded American-Russian probe with its eight sails
will be powered by sunlight alone, the light particles being reflected from
the sail like balls bouncing off a wall. These tiny impacts will accelerate
the probe.

Remember the "Radiometer" with 4 vanes, black on one side and white on
the other, mounted on a rotor in a light-bulb shaped, evacuated
glass? The rotor turned faster as the intensity of the sunlight
hitting it increased.
I wish I still had the one I had when I was a child. The reason and
direction of the rotor has been quibbled about a lot. Check it out:
