I'm not so sure. I think that until recent times reports of abuse were
just swept under the rug. It's only recently that people have started to
file complaints against the church and they found their way into the

I believe that they stopped selling them shortly after the Reformation.
When I used to go, the church still granted indulgences, but you had to
earn them by prayer, or other futile acts of devotion.

(Piggybacking).
Indulgences were for sale in Spain well into the 1920's.
They just changed the name (bulla). These were sold en masse
once a year from Rome to merchants and middlemen and sold
throughout the year to believers.
And American tourist caught much of this in 1911, bought a few,
and photographed the colorful parades as Spaniards celebrated the
arrival of new indulgences hot off the presses of Rome.
These ended up being published in an Atheist magazine in America
run by Joseph McCabe, an ex-Irish priest.
This resulted in much world wide laughter and hoorawing the RCC
church for indulgences. The sale of these things moved under the
table to locals only, and the parades and celebrations stopped.
Indulgences seemed to have ended by the mid 20's.
Indulgences were offered well into the 50's in many pious Catholic
books, so many indulgences for reading such works. I owned a few such
books in the past.

I was speaking of the selling of indulgences to the public.

Thank you, William.

Hello, theocracy with a fundamentalist US Supreme
