Object: Our God is an awesome god
I went to church this week. My wife runs the youth group, and the youth
group put on a show, so I went to see it. One of the songs being sung was
titled, "Out God is an Awesome God." I found that amusing. Perhaps that
is one of the many reasons why I object to the Catholic Church - too
arrogant. I would feel more comfortable with a religion that believed
that "Our God is a so-so God."

It's funnier when you read what you wrote rather than what you meant.

Their god is as awesome as they make him, of course this wont have any
change on the actual real world. These people are just beyond belief.
Take a look at these two pages. The first one of a US flag with the sun
shining through it, creating a crosslike pattern. The text goes "Take a
look at this picture. It's awesome!!! [...] Goes to show: Persons may
try to get God out of the government, but He will still shine through."
http://www.snopes.com/photos/azflag.asp
And the second one of a C-130 shooting out flares. "Someone sent us
this amazing photo that graphically illustrates an angel watching over
our troops."
http://www.snopes.com/photos/c130.asp
Yeah, make me vomit, why don't you.

"Our" god as opposed to what? "Their" god?
I thought Christians claim there's only one god.

One of the versions of the 10 commandments - somewhere in the
babble - God says: "You shalt not have any other Gods before me,
because I am a jealous God". That might have been written when
each tribe had its own Gods, with a "My God is better than your
God" attitude. The monotheism might have come along later.

Mark, may I ask a personal question? Was your wife always religious? I'm
curious because that would have been a dealbreaker for me. I don't think I
would have fallen in love with someone who believed in an interactive god and
followed a specific religion. That would be like falling in love with someone
with radically different political views.I know it happens but I don't see that

It's actually quite possible. I would be unable to be with a Calvinist,
for example, because those beliefs are downright evil no matter how you
look at it. But my girlfriend is religious, we've been together two
years, and we've worked it out by simply agreeing to disagree.
However, it's not all sunshine and flowers. Generally the problems in a
relationship like that come from one person and not the other. In my
case, my girlfriend recently told me that she won't be happy with our
relationship until I'm happy with my life, and that furthermore she
knows without a doubt that I'm not happy with my life because "it's
impossible to be happy without faith." In other words, we have a bad
relationship (in her mind) because I'm nonreligious.
I think, if I can't convince her otherwise, I'm gonna swear off romantic
relationships until I find someone who is either amazingly open-minded
or another atheist. And anyone who's not an atheist will have to give
me a whole lot of reason to believe they're open-minded.

My wife was raised Catholic, and remains so, though she does have some
reservations about the RCC. Her twin brother joined one of the
"Charismatic Christian" churches. I don't know if there is a specific
name for the denomination. It is one of those "Jesus is your buddy."
philosophies. Her other, older brother is non-religious.
Though it does cause some conflict, especially with regards to raising the
kids, it is not unmanagable. I don't think that two people will ever be
100% in agreement on everything, and if they were, it would make for a
very boring relationship.
With regard to the kids: before we got married, I had to agree that the
kids would be raised Catholic. I had no problem with that at the time.
I'm not sure that I would be able to agree to that now, however. In any
event, it is still OK with me. They are growing up in a society that is
dominated by Christianity, so such an upbringing is more "mainstream."
Although I don't actively disrupt their religious education, I make sure
that they are exposed to healthy doses of alternative points of view, such
as Monty Python movies. When they are old enough, they will be able to
decide for themselves if religion makes sense to them or not.

Though it does cause some conflict, especially with regards to raising the
kids, it is not unmanagable. I don't think that two people will ever be
100% in agreement on everything, and if they were, it would make for a
very boring relationship.

I lucked into a relationship with a man that is so like me that we say
the same thing at the same time. It's kind of scary.
We have long fascinating conversations that explore ideas rather than
argue about them.

I'm afraid that would be far beyond my tolerance. One of my main
atheist ethics is that telling a child what to believe is worse than
child molestation. You have to build a healthy questioning exploring
mind that would never allow anyone to stifle it by telling it 'just
have faith'.

I don't know if I'd say it was worse, but it's just as bad. As a former
child who was forced to attend church until I was 18, I can say that forcing
religion on a child is one of the worst kinds of abuse. It still haunts me
to this day, and I even have dreams about it.

My wife and I will drop into "Devil's Advocate" mode in an attempt to
see all sides. We can even switch sides and advocate the position we
were against earlier.... :)

I agree. I consider myself fortunate to have worked through all the
rubbish-well a lot of my memory tracks have been destroyed too.
However, the destruction occured later.

It always stuns me to hear Christians judging and evaluating their
god. I attended an evening event at a fundamentalist church (at the
invitation of a religious friend). It was supposed to be a
presentation by a supposed scientific type who was now selling
creationism and disavowing evolution, but most of the evening was just
a prayer fest. There was lots of moaning and waving of arms in the
air, but one woman just held my attention. For about 15 minutes she
just repeated, over and over, "Jesus, you are worthy." I wanted, so
badly, to ask her if she thought that Jesus might be worried on this
point. But I bit my tongue.
