Owner of Philly cheesesteak shop asked to stop English-only orders |
How dare these 'do-gooders' tell this hard working business owner that he
must kowtow to those who don't have the common decency to learn our native
tongue. If they don't like it, they can always go home and cook a meal (
for a change ).

PHILADELPHIA -- A City Council member jumped into the debate over a
sign at one of Philadelphia's best-known cheesesteak joints that reads:
``This Is AMERICA: WHEN ORDERING 'SPEAK ENGLISH.' ''
During the council's meeting Thursday, Councilman Jim Kenney asked
Geno's owner Joseph Vento to take the small sign down. The English-only
ordering sign has irritated some activists in the diverse neighborhood of
South Philadelphia and drawn national attention.
``It's such an iconic institution and business, one that is that
visible for many of our residents, for the region and the world,'' Kenney
said.
Vento, whose grandparents struggled to learn English after immigrating
from Sicily in the 1920s, said his staff is glad to help non-native speakers
order in English and no one has been turned away because of a language
barrier.
``I don't see much of a big deal about learning to say Cheez Whiz,''
he told ABC-TV's ``Good Morning America'' on Friday.

He should be more like you and tell people that they must obey or be
killed.

You mean like atheists being forced to kowtow to the Christian right
and being called unpatriotic because we laugh at the notion of "God
Bless America"?
You mean like all of us who have to kowtow to "family values" groups
when these groups can successfully get the FCC to coercively censor
(via fines) broadcasters despite a Constitution which permits freedom
of the press (electronic or otherwise).
You finally got one right Jon. How dare these bastards tell a liberty
loving people how to live their lives. It's past due that we Americans
remember that the first motto on the first coin minted by the newly
established United States of America was "Mind Your Own Business".

The actions of the disgraceful Clinton and Bush administrations
make it possible for me to say without shame that I deeply regret
the day I put the uniform of my country. The freedoms that I was
willing to protect with my life are gone. The America of our founders
is dead. All we are waiting for now is rigor mortis.

While I'm not going to go so far as to say that he should be required
to take
the sign down I can't agree with Young's sentiments. I could symapthise
with a resturant owner taking the stance that his staff should not be
expected to know or learn any language besides English but what is
the point of insisting that staff fluent in foreign language refuse to
do so?
Like most of the causes Young supports, it appears that this is not
really
about making life easier for white, Christian, heterosexual, English
speaking
American males but about making life harder for everyone else.

To me, this is just a simple business decision. The guys apparently
has enough business that he can chase business away. If he can, more
power to him. But as I saw on the TV news covering the story, he has
always had a competitor across the street. His competitor will says he
will serve anybody.
The owner is apparently as bigoted as they come. As for insisting for
his staff also speak only English, another business decision. He can
lose a bunch of employees too.
It's just a business decision, just like having a Jesus trinket on the
front door of your business. It might get some customers, but it will
guarantee a loss of some too. I wouldn't eat at his place just as I
don't shop at businesses that have Jesus trinkets in view. But then
again, it's a business decision.

There are two issues here: 1) Is the man being reasonable and
2) is it right for the authorities to intervene. You choose to
emphasize 2) while I emphasize 1) but I think we broadly agree
on both.

True, his sign is not obscene, hate speech is still considered covered
speech, and stupid speech has always been covered. His is a perfect
example of stupid speech. If we're lucky, he'll take a good hit on
the bottom line and give his competitor a boost.

My $0.02 worth: if the guy is stupid enough to chase off potential
business more power to him, it's his (business) throat he's cutting and
no the authorities have no right to impede his right to do business
anyway (no matter how stupid or vile) he sees fit as long as he doesn't
break laws doing it. IE he does not have the "right" to sell heroin in
his store, not even licensed doctors and pharmacists can do that and it
is the responsibility and duty of "the authorities" to stop him from
doing so and punish him if they catch him doing it. Are you aware of any
laws of the city or state where this business is located forbidding him
to have a sign like that in his shop? If not they should leave the
***** alone, if there is such laws make him stop the sign and punish
him if he doesn't comply with said laws. Out here on the west coast we
have enough people getting ridiculous laws passed about what a business
owner can and cannot do in his own business and I for one am sick to
death of buttinskis who "think" they know how everything should be run
(you know, people like "J Young").

Years ago I worked in a restaurant. One of the customers was
a deaf woman who read lips with great acuity. A new waiter,
recently hired, did not know this, so he failed to stand directly
in front of her when he asked, "May I take your order?"
I told the waiter, "She's deaf. You have to allow for that.
The waiter said, "Oh, okay." He paused, drew a deep breath, then
said to the woman, "MAY I TAKE YOUR ORDER?"

You can get a decent one outside of Philly, depending on where you go.
(IMHO) a real steak should contain only steak, onions, and cheese.

I like mine without the onions but with some of those "secret spices". :)

The sign is obviously rough. I am in favor that the all immigrants in
the US should to have to learn English as fast as possible. But I
prefer to press them in a politer manner.

I always make the pilgrimage to Jim's, over on South Street.
I've never been to Geno's, and I can't imagine passing up a
chance at a real cheese steak just to try them.

If you don't understand Philly slang, then you have no business
ordering a "cheese steak" anyway.
Quiz:
1. If you order a "steak" in Phillly, what does that mean?
2. What does "wit" mean?
3. What does "witout" mean?
Yo! Stay the hell out of south Philly if you can't answer those
questions, and certainly don't order a "cheese steak". They'll laugh
your ***** out of town and you'll be lucky if they don't kick it first.

I remember that particular kind of sandwich being called a "steak and
cheese" sandwich. The more important question of course is what kind of
cheese do they put on one? Out here on the west coast they "think" any
place that makes a sandwich (of any kind) is a "deli" (of course you
can't get a Reuben or knishes there <g>) and the "cheese steak" places
serve them with (wait for it:) *SWISS* cheese!!!
Of course the opposite is true of Mexican food on the east coast :) (It
just tastes weird when prepared by Puerto Ricans <g>)

Those things are not cheese, they're "cheesefood". It's amazing how many
Americans are unfamiliar with some of the best cheeses.

I admit my ignorance regarding cheese (as well as everything else),
but at least I never wanted cheese whiz on my steaks. However, it
seemed to me that most of the other customers were ordering it with
cheese whiz. This was in south Philly.
