Schools policy makes churches uncomfortable The Catholic and Anglican
churches have joined together to express concern about the federal
Labor Party's schools policy.
Under the Opposition's plan, funds will be taken from 67 wealthy
private schools and redirected to needy Catholic and Independent
schools.
The Anglican Archbishop, Peter Jensen, and the Catholic Archbishop,
George Pell, have issued a statement saying the policy is regrettable
and Labor's proposal lacks clarity.
Spokesman Brother Kelvin Canavan says the archbishops are concerned
the shift in funding could drive a wedge between Catholic and Anglican
schools.
"If you're taking money from one system of schools, the Anglican
schools, and giving the additional money to the Catholic schools,
there's a concern there," he said.
"The bishops are uncomfortable with this, if one group benefits at the
expense of the other."
Labor's education spokeswoman, Jenny Macklin, says the archbishops
have missed the mark in a number of areas.
She says Labor's policy returns most schools to the same level of
funding they received in 2001, which she says has been welcomed by a
number of state Catholic education directors.
