Papal pastor seeks global day of penance for priests' sexual abuse

(12-16) 04:00 PST Rome -- The pope's official pastor called Friday for a
worldwide day of fasting and penance to seek forgiveness for the sexual
abuse by some priests of "the smallest members" of the Roman Catholic
Church.
Speaking to Pope Benedict XVI and his top associates in a pre-Christmas
sermon, the Rev. Raniero Cantalamessa said that the church has paid a
high price for "abominations" committed by abusive priests, but that
deeper atonement is necessary, including a public expression of sorrow
and solidarity with victims.
"The time has come to do the most important thing: cry before God,"
Cantalamessa said.

EXCUSE ME? The most important thing is to "cry before God"? Not help
the violated? Not cooperate with criminal investigations? We're all
supposed to go hungry for a day to atone for crimes we didn't commit?
What sense does that make?
"Cry before God." It makes me want to puke.

None at all. Their only regret is that they got caught.

"Cry before God." It makes me want to puke.

And they wonder why people are getting tired of having to "respect"
religious nonsense. Sam Harris is right. Why do we continue to let
these people off the hook? If these priests were polititians or sports
stars, they'd be in jail where they belong. It's only because they're
Snake Oil Salesmen for God that they're not being punished for their
crimes.

It's Christian morality - you sin and someone else pays for it. Or,
in this case, a priest sins and we pay for it.
Not even in his dreams.
