Party Thread: Playlists |
The subject of this party thread was suggested by a section of the
Apple iTunes Music Store where celebrities and well-known musicions
suggest from 9 to 15 songs that they really like.
I'd like to know what's on YOUR playlist. The purpose is to have fun,
to learn a little about each other, and possibly get leads on new music
-- stuff you're not aware of or haven't listened to in a long time.
It's a party thread, so anything goes. But it would be great if you
made an effort to share your own playlist before commenting on someone
else's.
Nine to fifteen songs, including song title, artist, and a brief
description of why you like it or why it's on your list.
Here's mine:
1. "Imagine" -- John Lennon, because it's the best atheist song ever
written, and it's musically mature and beautiful. Astonishing
classical-like piano from one of the original rockers.
2. "I Will Play for Gumbo" -- Jimmy Buffett. A great little number
about seafood, sausage and those inevitable extra pounds. (Actually,
any Jimmy Buffett song will work here.)
3. "Stream of Consciousness" -- Dream Theater. A long, powerful, modern
rock journey; great on the iPod during an afternoon power walk.
4. "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" -- Jimi Hendrix. No list of mine
would be complete without some Jimi on it. This is one of his best
songs, an old black blues standard updated off the cuff to impress a
reviewer during a break in a recording session.
5. "Since I've Been Loving You" -- Led Zeppelin. Jimmy Page's virtuoso
guitar work and Robert Plant's blues voice make this one of Zep's best.
I like it because it hasn't been played to death like "Stairway" or
"Whole Lotta Love."
6. "20% Alcohol" -- Liz Mandville Greeson. If you sometimes drink too
much, like I do, you don't want a woman like this one. Instead, you
want one like I got, who thinks this song is funny as hell.
7. "Wooden Jesus" -- Temple of the Dog. Another atheist song by a
defunct Seattle grunge band.
8. "Orange Blossom Special" -- Montgomery-Sharpe. This version is by a
local 2-man band, one of whom used to work for me. John Sharpe plays
the best fiddle this side of Nashville, and his version of the old
southern fiddle standard will get you on your feet and dancin' like a
fool, even if you're stone cold sober, which I rarely am.
9. "ShutDOWN" -- OSI. This shortlived project from the members of Dream
Theater is spooky but catchy.
10. "Little Wing" -- Stevie Ray Vaughan. I've chosen SRV's version here
over Jimi's version because, well, I think Stevie did a better, cleaner
job, and it works supremely better as an instrumental than a vocal
backing.
11. "Comedown" -- Bush. A full-on rocker. I used to play this full
blast on the way to and from Fresno for about a year. I know every
note, every drum kick, every chord change. It's permanently seared in
my brain.
12. "Follow Me" -- Pat Methany Group. A neat little jazz number with
what I can only describe as a "walking structure." It makes you want to
get on your feet and strut around the room.
13. "Old Smoothies" -- Steve Goodman. This wonderful little folk song
about aging ice skaters brings tears to my eyes every time I play it. I
don't know why. Too bad about Steve. A comic genius who didn't get the
recognition he deserved when he was alive but seems to be getting some
now.
So, that's my playlist. Tomorrow it will probably change (it always
does!)
Hope you have time to share yours, too.

Couple of brief observations: #1: my computer makes a shitty
stereo. #2: I will not be caught dead with an iPod, or when
it was popular, that primitive earlier iteration, the
Walkman. Walking around with ***** plugged into your ears
making you partially unaware of your surroundings is a
recipe for getting hit by a car or mugged.
I'd like to know what's on YOUR playlist. The purpose is to have fun,
to learn a little about each other, and possibly get leads on new music
-- stuff you're not aware of or haven't listened to in a long time.
Stuff in my CD player right now:
"The Money Will Roll Right In"-Fang. Surprise, kids. The
version that's on the Nirvana album isn't the original, or
even worth listening to. This is grinding mid-tempo old
punk, awash in crassness, stupidity, and self pity. Worth a
laugh. The only thing on the cd that's actually any good,
though, IMO. Some other Fang "classics" like "Skinheads
Smoke Dope", "Welcome to My Suicide", etc. are over the
line. So fucking stupid they're actually painful to listen
to.
"Operation"-Circle Jerks. About getting a vasectomy before
reproducing, or even making it out of your teens.
Straight-up nihilism.
"Sod the Neighbors"-Toy Dolls. Fast. Decent guitar work.
Self-explanatory.
"White *****"-the Avengers. Just a good classic punk song
with a really politically incorrect title.
"Dirty Life and Times"-Warren Zevon. Nicely done, tasteful
contributions from some very good musicians, lyrics have
some humor, and yet it's depressing, as is the entire cd.
There's nothing like making an entire album about your own
terminal illness to bring other people down.
Art Tatum. I don't have any favorites. Most of what's on the
album appear to be show tunes. Mercifully, they're buried
under very fast, elaborate, and creative piano playing. It
would take a better ear than mine to pick out what the tune
originally was supposed to be.
The Residents-Commercial Album. Again, no favorites. Quirky
lyrics, and demonstrates how to prevent the seemingly
unavoidable electronic music phenomenon of dull,
repetitive,self-indulgent wanking. You cut all the songs off
at 1 minute.
"Whistling Blues"-Rev. Gary Davis. Brilliant guitarist.
Did mostly gospel, but this one is about picking up a woman
and getting drunk.
It's a party thread, so anything goes. But it would be great if you
made an effort to share your own playlist before commenting on someone
else's.

Well, let's put WinAmp on shuffle and see what comes up!
1. Queen - Hammer To Fall
2. The Who - Trick of the Light
3. AC/DC - You Shook Me All Night Long
4. Megadeth - Trust
5. Metallica - Leper Messiah
6. Captain Tractor - Drunken Sailor (1)
7. Judas Priest - Breaking The Law
8. Styx - Crystal Ball
9. Green Day - Geek Stink Breath
10. They Might Be Giants - Birdhouse In Your Soul
11. Tom Smith - Unicorn Song (2)
12. Green Day - Jesus of Suburbia (3)
13. Judas Priest - Metal Gods
14. Creedence Clearwater Revival - Who'll Stop The Rain?
15. Poison - Talk Dirty To Me
(1) Captain Tractor is a Celtic/Folk/Rock band from Canada.
(2) Tom Smith is a filksinger, one of the more successful performers
in this genre. "Unicorn Song" is rather silly.
(3) This is actually a nine-minute epic off the "American Idiot"
album. The song is made up of five connected subsongs.

Nine to fifteen works, huh? Well, here goes, in no order in importance
whatsoever.
-Tveitt's Variations on a Folksong from Hardanger
-Beethoven's Emperor concerto
-Brahms' Fourth Symphony
-Chopin's Ballade in G Minor
-Dvorak's Ninth Symphony
-Grieg's Piano Concerto (alas, his only one)
-Rochberg's Transcendental Variations
-Franck's Symphony in D Minor (again, alas)
-Kodály's Chorale Preludes
-Liszt's Transcendental Etudes
-Mahler's Second Symphony
-Moussorrgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition
-Penderecki's Fifth Symphony
-Rachmaninoff's Third
-Vasks' Fourth String Quartet
This, however, is not a desert island playlist.

Here's mine:
1. "Imagine" -- John Lennon, because it's the best atheist song ever

classical-like piano from one of the original rockers.
Good tune.
"Funeral for a friend" by Elton John. While in H.S. I came home and
flipped on WRIF radio and heard part of the opening instrumental with
jaw dropped. I called the radio station to find out who did it and
hopped on my bicycle and rode the hefty distance to the record store.
"Stone Cold" by Richie Blackmore. Everything interacts nicely.
4. "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" -- Jimi Hendrix. No list of mine
would be complete without some Jimi on it. This is one of his best
songs, an old black blues standard updated off the cuff to impress a
reviewer during a break in a recording session.
"All Along the WatchTower." Nicely done and I like the way the music
merges with the line "a wildcat did growl.'
5. "Since I've Been Loving You" -- Led Zeppelin. Jimmy Page's virtuoso
guitar work and Robert Plant's blues voice make this one of Zep's best.
I like it because it hasn't been played to death like "Stairway" or
"Whole Lotta Love."
Good one as is "Kashmere."
6. "20% Alcohol" -- Liz Mandville Greeson. If you sometimes drink too
much, like I do, you don't want a woman like this one. Instead, you
want one like I got, who thinks this song is funny as hell.
"The Green Manilishi with the two pronged crown"-Judas Priest.
Dynamite hard rock.
7. "Wooden Jesus" -- Temple of the Dog. Another atheist song by a
defunct Seattle grunge band.
Moody Blues. "Autumn" by Justin Hayward.
Faith No More-"Epic" off of "The Real Thing."
This caught my attention while I was fighting the USAF medical board
"Damage Control Team."
9. "ShutDOWN" -- OSI. This shortlived project from the members of Dream
Theater is spooky but catchy.
"Cherry Pie" by Warrent. Always brought a chuckle.
"Stay" by Shakespeare's Sister. IIRC, haunting.
Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours" LP.
10. "Little Wing" -- Stevie Ray Vaughan. I've chosen SRV's version here
over Jimi's version because, well, I think Stevie did a better, cleaner
job, and it works supremely better as an instrumental than a vocal

Lots of stuff by Pat Benatar. Hard driving stuff.
Patti Smith's stuff too-especially "Fredrick" and "Easter."
Tull.
13. "Old Smoothies" -- Steve Goodman. This wonderful little folk song

That's a tough one. It'll be difficult getting it down to 15,
but let's see. In any case, it will still be woefully
incomplete.
2) Memphis Jug Band - "Insane Crazy Blues" The title says it
all. A jug band enjoying their music as much as possible, at the
height of the Great Depression. Besides, everybody likes jug
band music, even if they don't realize it or refuse to admit it.
2) Mississippi John Hurt - "Louis Collins" Another great blues
song.
3) Richard Thompson - "1952 Vincent Black Lightning" Immediate
classic folk song written in 1992(?).
4) Bob Wills - "away out there" or many others. Must have some
western swing in this list.
5) Johnny Cash - "Folsom prison blues" Difficult to pick one
Cash song.
6) Molly O'Day - "Teardrops falling in the snow" The female Hank
Williams. Unfortunately her fundamentalism prevented her from
recording more.
7) Roy Acuff - "Blue Eyed Crying in the rain" The King of country
music for a reason.
8) Wynn Stewart - "heartache for a dime," "playboy," "wishful
thinking" The originator of the Bakersfield sound.
9) 16 Horsepower - "black soul choir" and the whole _Sackcloth
and ashes_ album. Really really dark "gothic country" where
you're out in the Appalachians and Satan is hiding behind the
next rock to kill you down, or maybe just steal your girlfriend.
And God is a very vengeful god, who's two rocks down also waiting
to smite you down, or maybe just steal your girlfriend. But I
don't think it's satire.
10) Built to Spill - "I would hurt a fly"
11) Modest Mouse - "Trailer Trash" Yes, I actually listen to
music other people have heard of.
12) Sleater-Kinney "One More Hour," "Good Things"
13) Gillian Welch - anything
14) Townes Van Zandt - "Poncho and Lefty," "To live is to fly,"
"for the sake of the song," "marie," "waiting around to die,"
many others.
15) Elliott Smith - anything, though "alemeda," "needle in the
hay" to pick to great ones off the top of my head.
16) Billie Holliday - "Summertime" or anything else. Can't help
felling in love with that voice.
17) Mose Allison - "You're mind is on vacation" Mose is just too
obscure for someone that good.
18) B F Shelton - "Oh Molly Dear" Haunting "East Virginia"
derivative with great subdued banjo work.
19) Buell Kazee - "East Virginia" the classic old time song.
20) ***** Justice - "Cocaine" old time version of the Luke Jordan
blues song. The original is also worthwhile.
21) Dock Boggs - "Pretty Polly" Best version of the classic
murder ballad.
22) Grayson and Whitter - "Little Maggie"
23) Roscoe Holcomb - "East Virginia Blues" or "Trouble in Mind"
High lonesome old time music.
24) Pernice Brothers, Joe Pernice, Scud Mountain Boys,
Chappaquiddick Skyline. Literally anything. No question about
it.
25) Palace Music/Brothers/Songs/whatever Will Oldham was calling
himself in those days - "I tried to stay healthy for you,"
"riding," "new partner," many others.
Well, that's not 9-15 songs, but that would be too difficult.
There's a John Sharp I've heard a song or two from old vinyl on a
local radio station, songs listed here:

Hmmm. Individual songs, individual bands. I don't really have any playlists
set up so far--too lazy. I'll either set the iPod for "Shuffle" or I'll
thumb my way to songs I feel like hearing.
01. The first four tracks from the self-titled Evanescence debut. Amy Lee's
voice is incredible, and her lyrics are sublime.
02. Green Jelly, "Rock 'n' Roll Pumkihn" from the "Cereal Killer
Soundtrack" album. This song cracks me up even after the umpteenth time
hearing it--the singer wails, growls, and whines the words "Rock 'n' Roll
Pumpkihn" (the only lyrics, pretty much), making it sound like
"rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrroooooooooockannnnndrooolllllll....puuuummmmpkihnnnn!"
over several bars of the catchy groove the band's playing behind him. But I
can't do it justice. Guaranteed to irritate people.
03. Green Jelly, "Cereal Killer", same album. Another novelty song, full of
driving full-throttle punk drumming, rapid-fire verses, the phrase "Toucan
Son of Sam", growled and screamed cereal slogans (SNAP! CRACKLE! POP!!),
and some of the most infreakincredible vibrato I've ever heard from any
singer.
04. Audioslave, "Like a Stone"; Chris Cornell's my favorite rock singer.
05. Audioslave, "Set it Off" and "Show Me How to Live"
06. Bloodhound Gang, "Fire Water Burn"; We don't need no water. "Discovery
Channel" is good for a laugh, too.
07. Chevelle, "Send the Pain Below"; the first time I heard this song, I
was wowed by the bassline. The guy's playing some very low notes my bass
can't reach, and they're crystal clear--not muddy like so many other songs
where the bass guitar is buried and competing for sonic space with de-tuned
guitars and overpowering drums.
08. Chevelle, "Vitamin R"--a riff on Ritalin; I love the guitar work, and
once again the bass guitar is the proper bass instrument. DAMN good sound.
09. Systematic, "Deep Colors Bleed", "Suffer", "Beginning of the End",
"Bitter Apple", "The Company we Keep", "Thick Skin". Awesome sound,
overall.
10. Pantera--anything from "Cowboys from Hell" when I'm in a thrash mood.
This album out-Metallicas Metallica when it comes to all-out beat-the-hell-
out-of-your-sound-system speed-metal attacks on the sonosphere.
11. Metallica--anything pre-"Load" and a few tracks from "Load" if I'm in
the mood for it.
12. ZZ Top, "Just Got Paid".

More threads like this and I just might spend more that a few minutes doing
a quick scan of aa.
Anyway on to the list, these aren't in any significant order. With one
exception I did limit it to one song per artist.
Suede - Animal Nitrate, the video for this was effectively banned - fat
woman in bikini and man kissing pig's head.
Pixies - Bird Dream Of The Olympus Mons
Faith No More - From Out Of Nowhere
The Mission - Butterfly On A Wheel
The Manic Street Preachers - Faster, well anything from the album The Holy
Bible really.
The Manic Street Preachers - Patrick Bateman, a B-side that was so good they
didn't put it on a album that was a collection of b-sides, can't think why,
beautiful lyrics see,
http://www.lyricsdir.com/manic-street-preachers-patrick-bateman-lyrics.html
Transvision Vamp - The Only One
W.A.S.P - Rebel In The FDG. Along with The Holy Bible the W.A.S.P. album
The Headless Children is the greatest album in the world ever.
Iron Maiden - Remember Tomorrow
U2 - With Or With Out You
The Jam - Going Underground
New Order - Blue Monday

I'd like to know what's on YOUR playlist. The purpose is to have fun,
to learn a little about each other, and possibly get leads on new music
-- stuff you're not aware of or haven't listened to in a long time.
My playlist consistes of songs by Grieg, Offenbach, and the Beethoven piano
concertos, Schumann's piano concerto, Debussy's La Mer and preludes, as
well as works by Mendelshonn, Saint-Saens, Bach, Brahms Symphonies and
serenades, Beethoven's Romances and sonatas, All of Chopin's works
including his piano concertos, Ravel, Stravinsky, Schubert sonatas, Wager,
operas by Puccini, Wagner, Mozart, and Bizet, Mozart concertos and
symphonies and that is just for starters. Then there is Ligeti, Strauss
both Richard and Johanne, Hubay, Rimsky-Korsakov, Tchaikovsky, and more.
Then there is my folk music collection, my pop collection, my broadway
sound track collection, movie soundtracks and even a little funk. One
can't forget Frankie or Elvis either. Rap music? That is a oxymoron.

(snip excellent list)
Here we go..
Today my list is :
Killing for jesus - Circle Jerks - I like the lyrics "I'm never bored,
when I'm killing for the lord ..." Hehehe!
Woodstock - Joni Mitchell - Gives me chills (solo vocal + Fender Rhodes)
Smoke two joints - Sublime - No comments :-)
Red House - Jimi Hendrix - Can you say underrated.
Meat Puppets - Lake of Fire - Guitar and Lyrics again
"where do bad folks go when they die?
they don't go to heaven where the angels fly
they go down to the lake of fire and fry
won't see 'em again till the fourth of july"
I Don't Wanna Grow Up - Tom Waits - Hey I don't wanna either.
The Hardest Button To Button - White Stripes - Rock edgy and as basic as
it gets
Yassassin - David Bowie - It's all good.
Bohemian Polka - Weird Al Yankovich - I'll take the fifth on this one.
Tin Pan Alley - Stevie Ray Vaughan - Slow Moody and Bluesy, great guitar
work.
Anguish and fear + On the run again - Yngwie Malmsteen - Fast and
furious classical/rock guitar.

In no particular order:
1. "Dancing Gold" - Belly. Found in a random mp3 search,
decided it was a keeper.
2. "Over" - Portishead. Not a band you'll like on the
first listen. Back when I had an income, I used to buy
CD's from random bands I'd never heard of before. This
was one of the 'bargain bin' bands I stumbled onto. Dark
and moody.
3. "Better Than a Kick in the Head" - Sharkskin. Another
'bargain bin' keeper, instrumental. Hey, who knew the LP
was supposed to be played at 45rpm? It's a long story...
4. "Autumn Harmony" - For My Pain. Goth Metal. Heard it
on SnakeNet, ran around to every music store in town
trying to find it.
5. "Unguarded Moment" - The Church. Aussie band, 80's
pop, but this one brings back fond memories.
6. "Lyda" - Debris. Another chance encounter from the
mists of time. Pop/rock.
7. "Poultrionics: A Virtual Chicken Experience" - Barrett
Tagliano. The name's a grabber, but the tune stands on
its own. Jazzy/bluesy.
8. "When the Levee Breaks" - Led Zeppelin. I'm not
generally a blues fan, but with tunes like this, I can
begin to see the appeal...
9. "Love Canal" - Atomic Mosquitos. The result of a 'net
search during my 'California Surf' music phase.
10. "You Look so Fine" - Garbage.
11. "What's the Frequency Kenneth" - R.E.M
12. "Unbundled" - Dave Loaded. At least this is what's
in the mp3 header. Surf music.
13. "Closer" - Remix Villain. Okay, so I had a brief
fling with dance music at Epitonic (IIRC). Sue me. ;)
14. "Golgotha" - Skinny Puppy.
15. "Four Seasons" - Vivaldi. Neville Marriner and the
Academy; you got a problem with that? ;)
===
I could go on about bands like Spiritualized, Lush, Cradle of
Filth, Mortiis, et al, but you did set a limit! :)
And yeah, chib, I agree with you on Dream Theater; I'd like to
track down more of their stuff.
