Object: Passive-aggressive, petty ***** bosses...
Background, first.
On Monday, I hopped into my work truck to make a delivery run. It was
foggy with moderate temperatures, so the cab of the truck quickly started
feeling sticky and uncomfortable (good old Florida).
I tried to turn the air conditioner on. Nope. Shrug. Roll down the
windows, make a note of it, and keep driving.
I left it alone the rest of the day, ignored it on Tuesday, and finally
got a test light from my car to check the fuse for the A/C system.
Fuse was gone.
I asked the store manager about this.
"You're going to have to drive with your windows down. I took the fuses
out of all the trucks to save on gas money."
There's no telling what his REAL reason for it was--I think he did it to
be a *****, and to exert some "control" over the rest of us. We just gave
him a "yeah, whatever" and replaced the fuses.
Same guy took the circuit breakers out of the store's A/C system to keep
anyone from trying to bring the temperature down below HOLY CRAP IT'S AN
OVEN IN HERE! (his boss got involved; the circuit breakers mysteriously
reappeared)
....took all the chairs and stools and locked them in storage to keep
anyone else from sitting down (but he sits in his office, smoking and
talking on his cell phone after pointing out no one's allowed to do that)
....left A/C filters, wire, trash, etc. scattered on the floor to see how
long it'll be before one of us picks it up for him ("this *****'s not
going to pick itself up, you know")
Who else here works with such a schmuck?

<snippage of story>

Who else here works with such a schmuck?

No one that bad, thank goodness. However there is this one "gentlemen" I
work with that TOTALLY gets on my nerves. He's the VP of Business Planning,
which I'm assuming means "***** Artist Extraordinaire", a real shmoozer.
He also seems to think that whenever he pops in the office, that I instantly
become his personal assistant. I don't think so! We were ready to kill
each other this past Tuesday because I had a ton of stuff to do and he was
freakin' out over this presentation that he was trying to print for a
meeting the next day. Sorry, you don't sign my paycheck - You're not my top
priority. He finally barked, "What's with your attitude today?!?" I just
looked at him and said "whatever" and went back to what I was doing. I
mean, he got pissed at me because I couldn't read his handwriting - it's not
my problem it resembles pigeon drizzle.
He's also very intrusive and likes to ask personal questions or make
incredibly stupid comments. "Hey, someone ate all the doughnuts. I bet it
was Robyn!" "Hey Robyn, did you work out today?" STFU, jerk! None of your
business!
Ah, I feel better. Thanks! :)

I don't think he can spell.
He STILL hasn't caught on that I put the fuse back in my truck. If it's
gone in the morning, I'll just replace it and put a note: "Leave my damn
fuses alone." I'm more amused by all this than angry--I'm just gathering
this stuff to use in a book. No way I'd ever have come up with the "I'm
trying to save gas money" excuse on my own.
Should be sorted out soon enough: one of the other drivers found his fuse
missing this morning--AND jackass took his owner's manual so he couldn't
see which fuse was missing. Here's the funny part: The driver went to the
other Ford truck and got the manual from it, figured out the fuse,
replaced it--and called the manager's boss (the district manager) to
complain.

In FLORIDA? That's one of our "Sunshine states" -- right?

There's no telling what his REAL reason for it was--I think he did it to
be a *****, and to exert some "control" over the rest of us. We just gave
him a "yeah, whatever" and replaced the fuses.

Same guy took the circuit breakers out of the store's A/C system to keep
anyone from trying to bring the temperature down below HOLY CRAP IT'S AN

reappeared)

I once worked in a computer room where they did that. "We always have
work to do, so there will be no reason for you to sit down while you're
on the job." That was the official line. Assholes.
It was the only computer room I ever worked in where the consoles were
set up on wooden stands to bring the keyboards up to chest height. We
all just took to sitting on the damn disk drives.

(but he sits in his office, smoking and
talking on his cell phone after pointing out no one's allowed to do that)
...left A/C filters, wire, trash, etc. scattered on the floor to see how
long it'll be before one of us picks it up for him ("this *****'s not
going to pick itself up, you know")

Who else here works with such a schmuck?

I was told that I'm not allowed to do anything of a personal nature at
work. So I can't check my Yahoo mail, I have to turn off my cell phone
except for when I'm on my lunch break. I've noticed that no one else on
my team worries about that sort of *****, but I've had it, myself. I just
wish there were some places around here that were hiring programmers,
but it seems that the economic recovery has totally bypassed this part
of North Carolina.

I once worked in a computer room where they did that. "We always have
work to do, so there will be no reason for you to sit down while
you're on the job." That was the official line. Assholes.

I've gotten utterly tired of working "corporate" jobs--convenience
stores, parts delivery, inventory, all operated from out of state by
desk-jockeys who haven't done the job themselves, but tell me how to do
it.
Tom Thumb (convenience store): District operations manager or whatever he
was wouldn't talk to anyone below store manager. He walked in one
afternoon, ignored me, and went right into the office. Didn't find the
manager, so he walked back out without a word.
The Lesson: I've seen this in a lot of other corporate jobs--the people
who make the money for the company don't matter.
Pep Boys (auto parts): They hired an inexperienced chick as the store
manager to replace the experienced man who had been doing a good job
already. She ran the store into the ground, defrauded us peons out of
overtime pay, manipulated the time clock entries, and bitched me out for
telling a customer the truth about her car. The customer had gotten a
brake job a few months earlier, and the mechanic had only done a cursory
inspection of her rear brakes. He never even looked at the passenger-side
rear, which still had the factory lock washer--and which was worn down to
metal. I ignored the manager and advised the customer to take her car to
another shop and spread the word. This was 1997 and I'm still feeling
pretty damn good about that.
The Lesson: The company's interests come before the customer's safety or
a professional opinion.
In the meantime, I've been racking my brain trying to come up with
something I enjoy AND that I can do for self-employment that people will
pay for.

It was the only computer room I ever worked in where the consoles were
set up on wooden stands to bring the keyboards up to chest height. We
all just took to sitting on the damn disk drives.

That's pretty damn barbaric and petty of management. Sadly, it doesn't
surprise me.
