I was sorry to hear that. But I was sorrier to hear he had pancreatic
cancer several months ago because the end was inevitable.
A giant of a singer in more ways than one. The quality voice, his
range and his breath control were amazing.

That would be Pavarotti...

While not a great fan of the opera, I appreciated his talent.

Luciano Pavorotti was the finest Bel Canto tenor of his generation and
there has emerged no one to take his place. The purity and clarity of
his tone, the seeming effortlessness of his singing made him a delight
to watch and bliss to hear. The world is a poorer place without him in
it and I, for one, will mourn his loss far more than a hundred
princesses or self-destructive 'celebrities'.

At the same time as Pavarotti we lost, here in Leeds, Jane Tomlinson
also of cancer.
Diagnosed with cancer and only six months to live she tireless
went on a campaign to raise money for cancer research. She took
part in marathons, cycled across the USA, and did other sporting
things all to raise cash and this diminutive woman inspired many to
follow in her giant footsteps and battle against illness in a
positive way. Always cheerful, always positive even though
she suffered considerable pain and debilitating chemotherapy. Almost
everybody loved her.
The organisor of the London Olympics Sebastian Coe also gave
her a warm tribute for the help she gave in bringing the Olympics
to London and for her inspiration.
She was a Roman Catholic, a mother of three, but at no time (AFAIK
from seeing her numerous interviews on local and national TV) did she
mention or promote her religion or overtly wear religious symbolism,
something else that is much too her credit.
A real peoples Princess?

I have nothing against Jane Tomlinson, I wished her nothing but good
things and it is saddening that she has died. i am less than happy
with the way her story was covered, the 'media sainthood' she has been
awarded and the assumptions and attitudes that go with all such
reporting.
People with chronic, life-threatening or terminal illnesses are
continually being shown these 'positive' examples and it becomes
obvious that the 'correct' way to deal with their condition is to be
'always cheerful, always positive', to be uncomplaining about pain, to
'battle' on. Why is it unacceptable to complain loudly, to be made
miserable, to be depressed and to show it?
This very week, one cancer patient I know is refusing to report
changes in his condidtion to the medical team because he thinks it's
complaining, not 'being brave' enough.

There are so many different kinds of cancer that
there are many cures and delaying medicines to
be found. Cancer took both my parents. One year
after my father died, a medicine was created that
would have kept him alive longer. One step at a time.

Both, hopefully. The sooner God is stopped, the sooner stupid and
ludicrous laws limiting medical research will be abolished.
