Schoolgirl arrested for refusing to study with non-English pupils
A teenage schoolgirl was arrested by police for racism after refusing to
sit with a group of Asian students because some of them did not speak
English.
Codie Stott's family claim she was forced to spend three-and-a-half
hours in a police cell after she was reported by her teachers.
....
The teenager had not been in school the day before due to a hospital
appointment and had missed the start of a project, so the teacher
allocated her a group to sit with.
"She said I had to sit there with five Asian pupils," said Codie
yesterday.
"Only one could speak English, so she had to tell that one what to do so
she could explain in their language. Then she sat me with them and said
'Discuss'."
According to Codie, the five - four boys and a girl - then began talking
in a language she didn't understand, thought to be Urdu, so she went to
speak to the teacher.
"I said 'I'm not being funny, but can I change groups because I can't
understand them?' But she started shouting and screaming, saying 'It's
racist, you're going to get done by the police'."
Codie said she went outside to calm down where another teacher found her
and, after speaking to her class teacher, put her in isolation for the
rest of the day.
A complaint was made to a police officer based full-time at the school,
and more than a week after the incident on September 26 she was taken to
Swinton police station and placed under arrest.

I can understand this... my parents next door neighbours have two elementary
school aged kids who used to be in public school. Problem was they were the
only ones in their respective classes that didn't speak Hindi or Urdu... all
the other kids would only chat in their native tongues and they ended up
isolated with no friends - plus the communication barrier prevented the
teacher from moving forward at a normal pace. Problem was solved when they
pulled their kids out of public school and placed them in a catholic
school... at least there the kids speak english. There are many children
born in this country (Canada) for whom english (or french - but I'm guessing
here) is simply not spoken at home or in their communities, and it doesn't
seem that the problem will go away anytime soon.

But to arrest the girl and haul her downtown in handcuffs because she
complained, that is pure lefty PC fascist intimidation tactics.

Not when the labels are the way the people describe themselves.
If they actually define themselves with the label, I guess they're
fair game. I don't personally label myself as a liberal or
conservative or left-wing or right wing. I agree with certain
things from both sides, but also disagree with certain things from
both sides as well, so I can't really claim to be either, at least
100%.
Don't you get tired to defending such indefensible political nonsense?
I actually agreed with you on the above issue, so does that make me a
conservative right-winger from now on, or do I have to take a pro-life
stance when it comes to abortion?

Me neither. I've said it many times before right here. I object to the

The Bush-bashers are getting to be just as boring as the fundies
anymore. They have a lot in common: impervious to logic, unable to see
merit in any other position, preferring their pet beliefs to the
evidence even when you rub their nose in it. This Lancet travesty is
just the latest example.

He doesn't really believe that, he's just pretending to, to upset
people and get responses... :)

I certainly don't take a pro-life stance on abortion.
Where did you get that from?
For some reason I thought you were a die-hard Republican and followed
the party-line on all its issues.
There's a lot of that going on here - people get an image
in their heads of what their 'opponents' are supposed to
be like, then keep getting surprised when people don't
quietly nestle into their pigeonholes like they're expected
to.

That's why I don't like labels, since they tend to create pigeonholes.
I'd rather find out issue by issue what somebody believes, or doesn't
believe, instead of lumping them into a group and stereotyping them.

Saudi Arabia is *fighting* al Qaeda. Maybe you haven't been paying
attention to the news?

I have. They are not our allies. The only reason they 'fight' al Qaeda
today is because they have been attacked.

Says a hate-filled bigot so bursting with the defensive need to express his

And I defend the Iraq war

And the hate-filled bigot expresses his contempt for America. Nice of
you to be so explicit about your hate for this country. Maybe France
would suit you better. They're real good at bareing their necks so as
not to be accused of "perpetrating and supporting" terrorism by the sort

Contempt from the contemptible like you is a sign that I'm succeeding in
getting my point across.

Hmm. Who knew that creating a safe zone for terrorists was the same as
fighting them, huh?
Geez, I guess I've got this whole 'War on Terror' thing completely
misunderstood. It turns out that all you have to do is make a little
retreat for them instead!
