I used to like P & T. Then I watched the second (or third?) season of their
show *****!
It was full of Libertarian *****. They spoke to a tobacco shill who told
them second-hand smoke was harmless. Then they interviewed some poor git
from a demonstration who turned inarticulate in front of a camera, when
they asked here why preserving biodiversity was important- why didn't they
ask E.O. Wilson the same questions? Because they might have been convinced?
I was sorely disillusioned.

But was that disillusionment fact based or based on perception? Is P&T's
show fact based or not?
Let pick a topic for example and just to keep it simple, let's dissect the
show listed above.
Name 3 assertions that P&T have factually wrong.
Why was the show full of "Libertarian" ***** but before you do that
please define "Libertarian *****". Name 3 items that you consider
"Libertarian *****".

Chris,
If you see a previous posting of mone replying to your comments, please

I must admit though that your term "Libertarian *****" mystifies me. I
always thought that the Libertarians had a pretty good philosophy that made
good sense. Has that changed sometime in the last few years?

While I agree with scattered bits of Libertarian philosophy, I think
they believe they can divorce themselves from a responsibility to
society, and still reap the benefits of belonging to that society.
Another poster mentioned public schooling as an example. A true
Libertarian does think there should be public schooling (there's one or
two over on talk.origins, as a matter of fact). They live in some sort
of Ayn Rand fantasyland. The fact is that public schools are society's
investment in the future. They're too selfish to want to pay for it
though (but try to tell them they wouldn't be able to afford medicines
developed by publically funded research and hear them howl!)
In general, pure Libertarians are idiots, as much as pure Liberals or
pure Conservatives.

While I generally like the Libertarians more than the Republicans,
Democrats, and Greens, I personally think their philosophy is dogmatic
and fatally flawed. I think they are simply too idealistic and naive.
For instance, if the Libertarians had their way, people would all send
their children to private school. While this would be "fair", it would
not be pragmatic. It would actually destroy the country. Poor kids with
lazy parents wouldn't go to school. They would grow up to be criminals.
Higher education costs would become exhorbant (with no public
universities). And public research would decline. America would become
more ignorant, poor, criminal, and would quickly loose it's place as a
technological leader.
I think Libertarians are overly focused on individual freedom and
fairness and often miss the bigger picture. Who wants to live in a
society where you don't have to pitch in for the poor/lazy kids to go
to school, when the country is a ignorant, poor, criminal shithole.

I totally agree. P&T's BS has degraded into Libertarian BS, but it just
didn't start this last season, it's been a gradual process.
I always noticed that in the earlier episodes, that even when they were
correct they would sometimes get really bad "experts" or appeal to
emotions rather than being rational. Talk show hosts and people from
the Heritage foundation in no circumstance count as experts.
I'm not really a liberal person (I loved when they attacked the
greens), but the kicker for me was their pro-guns episode.
Specifically where they brushed off the fact that a gun in the home was
43 times more likely to shoot a neighboor or relative than an intruder,
because you don't know how many intruders the existence of said gun
prevented. (I wasn't even aware it was that bad) Would that many
thieves really leave when they see a gun cabinet? Do most gun owners
keep their guns in a living room gun cabinet? I would think theives
would steal the guns. 43 is such an overwhelming number, 1 would have
been high to me.
Secondly the way they got the Hispanic gang member to scare people into
thinking they need guns to feel safe. That was the lowest of the low.
Lower than a home security commercial.
And thirdly they didn't look at any other countries like UK, Canada,
Brasil to see how gun laws do and do not effect the culture. Honeslty,
the blatantly leftist Michael Moore did a much more objective and
meticulous job in his movie Bowling for Colombine. There are just soooo
many facts to bring up here. Like how as the UK economy has fallen and
crime rate has risen to surpass US crime, but homicide is still much,
much lower in the UK than in the US. Or how Canadians have more guns
than the US, but fewer murders.
I lost most respect for P&T that episode. I really was hoping that P&T
were going to pass on the tradition of Randi, but they are certainly no
Randi.

Yes, the show has deteriorated to the point where the title now
reflects the content, rather than the topic.
They should have given up while they were ahead.
