personal liberty |
I was reading the account of one person's defection from East Germany years
ago at www.myspystorycom. I found this quote interesting.
"The fundemental lack of freedom manifested itself in a number of
sociologically interesting ways. East-Germany had a high rate of alcoholism
and a great deal of promiscuity. If drugs had been available, a great
percentage of the country would have been addicted."
Our freedoms are certainly much less than they were several years ago. I
wonder if that is why we have the increase of social problems today. Now it
seems that the religious right wants to take away more rights and then they
will condemn others for the additional ills they will bring upon society.

Amen to that. (I'm being facetious.) I find it very amusing that, when
sifting through the various religious TV shows, that the preachers, pastors,
evangelizing ministers and the like of the far right, are, once again,
incessantly complaining. This time, it's about how "our" (meaning their)
religious rights are "under serous assault," and that they're being
seriously "eroded." Well where, pray tell, is *that* occurring? I see none
of it. Instead, like you, I see the religious-right trying to impose their
nastiness upon *us*. And then they have the *nerve* to beg for even *more*
money to ward off some mythological "crisis". "We must, they cry, "stave off
this "liberal" assault on "our" (meaning *their*) liberties" Well the truth
is, these people are just plain full of it. These people feign persecution,
when in fact, *they* are the persecutors! (No need to go into the gory
details here.) These people come to expect "fair-play," such as when it
comes to ID vs. Evolution and the like in the classroom. Or prayer in public
schools. But *they* don't play fair. Not by any stretch of the
imagination.Case in point: Ask a fundie pastor, if he or she would like to
"rotate" prayers in public school.(*If* Congress somehow passed such an
Amendment.) That is to say, on Monday, you would say a Moslem "prayer," on
Tuesday, you'd say a Buddhist prayer, on Wednesday, you'd say a "Moonie"
prayer, on Thursday, you'd pray to nobody (for the atheists) and on Friday,
you'd say an especially warm and heart-felt "Christian" prayer. I wonder how
*that* would sit with Mr. and Mrs. "Holier Than Thou"? What do ya think?
