I just got back from Otay Lakes with my kids after evacuating them and my
parents.
----------
11:02 a.m. October 26, 2003
At least two people were killed and untold homes burned Sunday as the worst
of three San Diego County wildfires charred its way across 10,000 acres
from Ramona to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.
Thousands of residents were ordered out of threatened neighborhoods as
evacuation centers were set up throughout the county.
Interstate 15 was closed north of Highway 52 as the fast-moving fire jumped
the 10-lane roadway.
Fire officials had no estimate on when the blazes could be brought under
control.
Area residents were asked to stay off major roadways to leave them clear
for emergency equipment. San Diego issued a call for all first- and
second-watch officers to immediately report for duty.
There was no official estimate of the number of homes that had burned, "but
I know we lost a lot of structures," said Lora Lowes of the California
Department of Forestry.
Two people were found dead in a burned-out car along Lake Vicente Road in
the wake of what has been dubbed the Cedar Fire, authorities said.
The San Diego County Medical Examiner's office said it had received
"multiple" calls about deaths, but could not say how many or whether they
were all fire-related.
More than 2,300 firefighters were fighting the blazes, Lowes said.
The largest fire, dubbed the Cedar Fire, began near Ramona at midnight and
had burned at least 15 miles southwest to Scripps Ranch by dawn, charring
10,000 acres on the way.
The Paradise Fire near Valley Center had burned at least 1,500 acres near
Lake Wohlford by 10 a.m.
A third fire, the Mine Fire, had burned 300 to 500 acres in the Marron
Valley near the Mexican border.
Dozens of roads were closed due to flames or heavy smoke. Interstate 15 was
closed between Highway 52 and Mira Mesa Boulevard due to smoke from the
Scripps Ranch fire. Westbound 52 was closed at State Route 125.
A fire command post on Gunn Stage Road near Ramona had to be abandoned
after it caught fire at 8:50 a.m., according to the California Highway
Patrol.
A huge plume of smoke towered over much of the county, raining a thick
layer of ash stretching to downtown San Diego.
The blazes erupted after days of "red flag" alerts that the weather was
creating ideal conditions for wildfires.
"It's hot, it's dry and its' windy: The bad things," Lowes said.
In San Bernardino County, the Grand Prix fire burned another 50 homes, for
a total of 66 homes, and charred at least 47,000 acres. Another San
Bernardino County blaze, labeled the Old Fire, destroyed at least 200 homes
on Saturday and had blackened 12,00 acres by Sunday.

Good to hear you & the kids are safe. Since you're back on the net, I
guess we can assume your house survived as well.

Not safe yet . . . the kids were staying with the grandparents. They had
to evacuate, so we're home. Now evacuations just a mile away from here!
Maybe two evacuatioins in one day from two different fires.

I just got back from Otay Lakes with my kids after evacuating them and my
parents.
At 9:00 this morning the fires were 3 miles east of here.
I was a little concerned.
Fortunately they seem to have grown mostly southwestward.
The neighbor was raking up the dead grass in his back
yard and laid out his garden hose.

I heard on the news that the fires swept through
San Carlos. I imagine you have been evacuated
(and probably won't see this for a while).
I hope your house survived.
I think the winds have been unexpectedly calm today.
Most of the news I hear today is concentrated
in the eastern rural areas.
Things are looking up for me and most
of the people.

Parts of San Carlos are evacuated. I haven't heard of any lost homes.
We're still here but packed and ready to run.
