PETA: Animal abusers should be jailed
MILFORD -- A worldwide animal rights group yesterday called for two
Ecuadorian women charged with beating and abusing a sheep to be jailed.
In a letter, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals urged
Worcester District Attorney John Conte to "take every measure
necessary" to ensure Maria Pizha-Tacuri, 39, and her daughter Rosa
Pizha, 20, are convicted of animal cruelty charges and incarcerated.
The group further seeks psychological evaluation and mandatory
counseling for the women at their own expense.
"This case struck a note," said Martin Mersereau, manager of
PETA's domestic animal abuse department at the organization's Norfolk,
Va., headquarters.
The women were arrested April 9 after staffers at the nearby
Blaire House called police reporting the women were dragging a hog-tied
sheep around outside their Cemetery Street home and beating it with
sticks, according to a police report.
Through an interpreter, Pizha-Tacuri told police she was using the
"animal as a pinata and later planned to stab the animal to death with
a knife to eat," the police report said.
Witnesses told police the women appeared to be enjoying themselves
and that one looked as if she were about to break the animal's neck.

Did you catch the episode of Penn and Teller's ***** where they point
that out? An absolute classic. Even if she didn't use natural insulin,
the synthetic kind was manufactured using massive amounts of animal
testing. If the ***** isn't dead, she's a hypocrite.
She apparently went on the record as claiming that since her work saved
the lives of so many animals, her use of insulin was justified. I
suppose extremists are the same everywhere, eh?

That statement certainly qualifies her as a first class hypocrite.
It's actually very unlikely that she still uses animal insulin, from
what I understand. I think it has been almost completely been replaced
by the synthetic "human" insulins and animal insulin is now virtually
impossible to obtain in this country. However, if she's been a Type 1
diabetic for a significant length of time she almost certainly used
animal insulin in the past. Plus, as you point out, those synthetic
insulins had to go through animal testing before they were approved. I'm
not sure how much animal testing was used during the initial development
of current technologies (meters, pumps) that are used to treat diabetes
(new pumps and meters don't really need animal testing because they're
pretty much building on existing devices that are already used in
humans). However, any true cure for diabetes will certainly involve
extensive animal testing before use in humans. I wonder if she'd turn
down such a cure because of the research required to develop it.
Yes - almost her exact words.

Beef insulin is no longer available in the US (the FDA approves imports on a
case-by-case basis), but pork insulin still is, at least for the time being.
Still, you're right -- it's very unlikely that she uses either.
