Physicists - Pioneers? or Harry Potter's? |
Why should we listen to anything the physicists have to say about the
nature of our world? At every turn they convert their mathematics and
precise observations into a tele-tubby metaphysics, with models that
fail on first showing. Here are just three examples offered at one time
or another by our Harry Potter Physicists:
1. "Space-Time
Yes ... Space-Time... So, when space is curved, time speeds up or slows
down. Does the picture convince? No, a line is the same length when
straight as curved. What exactly did the physicists hope to show or
explain with the model of (curved) space-time?
2. Gravitons and Hidden Worlds
The more modern version of curved space and dilated time employs the
idea of gravitons (gravity 'particles') and hidden worlds. Just two
things of note here, 1) are we to suppose that all other particles have
no mass at all? 2)if there are 'hidden worlds' into which gravitons
disappear from our own world, then our world must be in its turn a
hidden world. Why the preference then, for gravitons to disappear into
another world? Are the physicists promoting the idea that 'hidden' is a
property? It jolly well seems like it.
4. Black holes
The popular model of a black hole, or a gravity source, or worm-hole is
given by a flat rubber sheet stretched by a ball-bearing in its centre,
or similar. The model fails completely. For in the same teaching we are
asked to suppose that the greater the curvature, the greater the
gravity. Unfortunately, the rubber sheet model depicts its straightest
lines precisely where they should be more curved!
3. The Expansion of the Universe
Here, the teletubbies get into the swing of it. The maths is fine lads
and, granted, we know that there wasn't an 'explosion' into space. But
why suggest the idea that the universe, for example, 'expanded'? If we
want to say that diversity arose or was created, then we ought to
include space as a diversity, and not name space(or time, substance,
light, etc) as a measure of that diversity.

Einstein's prediction, that observation raised Einstein's stature from
great scientist to public celebrity.

the previous model, called the Newtonian Model, because it was developed by
Isaac Newton. That work similarly raised Newton from the status of great

Not all physicists believe these theories about hidden worlds, because
there is no experimental evidence at all, for them. Remember, at heart,
physics is an *observational* science, and theories that exist without
observations to confirm them probably have no basis in reality. However
the mathematics that predicts these things is very intricate and beautiful,
and as a self-contained mathematical method, this work is quite
stimulating. However, it is merely a prediction of what the actual physics
of gravity might be, and will be revised or discarded if any experimental
evidence ever becomes available.

You have misinterpreted the description. The model does not fail at all,
but has been an extraordinary success. It accurately predicted the
existence of black holes and neutron stars, both of which have been
observed. Within the last two years, Nasa has released an actual movie, of
x-ray images from the Chandra telescope, of a neutron star, with jets of
energetic matter being expelled from its poles.

We do know that there was an explosion into space.
But
why suggest the idea that the universe, for example, 'expanded'?
Because we can see with our own eyes, using telescopes, that extragalactic
objects are all flying away from each other. That's why we say that the
universe expanded and is still expanding.
If we
want to say that diversity arose or was created, then we ought to
include space as a diversity, and not name space(or time, substance,
light, etc) as a measure of that diversity.
This is just plain gibberish. Diversity is not a concept that has any
meaning in physics. Diversity is a concept that has meaning in civil
rights.

Actually, regarding that very point Newton said "hypotheses non fingo"
didn't he?
Correctly so. Science is in the business of making models which describe
"what happens" happens, not "what is". "What is" is ultimately unknowable.
And the terms used along the way merely allow us to talk about the
models.

With a degree in physics, I tend to believe physics is correct, but only
because it always gives the correct fucking locations of planets decades

given by a flat rubber sheet stretched by a ball-bearing in its centre,
or similar. The model fails completely. For in the same teaching we are
asked to suppose that the greater the curvature, the greater the
gravity. Unfortunately, the rubber sheet model depicts its straightest
lines precisely where they should be more curved!
3. The Expansion of the Universe
Here, the teletubbies get into the swing of it. The maths is fine lads
and, granted, we know that there wasn't an 'explosion' into space. But
why suggest the idea that the universe, for example, 'expanded'? If we
want to say that diversity arose or was created, then we ought to
include space as a diversity, and not name space(or time, substance,
light, etc) as a measure of that diversity.
Let me guess, centuries of research and thousands of minds working on
these issues pale in comparison of your disbelief? While physics can
be a confusing and puzzling topic, its theories have thus far proven
sound. So you can rest assured that these models you apparently cannot
grasp are indeed our best understanding of reality.
