Object: Ping: Credentialed scientists - headcount
I'm curious as to how many credentialled scientists - athiest or
non-atheist - regularly read and/or post to alt.atheism (I'm also
interested in lurkers, so you need not be a regular poster to chime
in). Of those who are willing to respond, would you just say who you
are and what your credentials are and, if it's not too much to ask,
where you're credentialled from? I'm not any kind of credentialled
scientist (yet, I can hope), and so cannot answer this question
myself. But I'm just really, really curious to know "who's here", so
to speak. :-)

I have a doctorate in chemistry, NYU, 1966.
I did my doctoral thesis research on nucleoside chemistry and have
worked on various aspects of DNA chemistry for over 35 years. Recently I
got into peptides.
Most of this work was done in the biotech industry.

Heh! Yeah. Sometimes I think that if I had gone for polymer or petroleum
chemistry I'd e a lot richer today. Still by concentrating on the
biochemical aspects of chemistry I got to do some cutting edge science
and to meet some really interesting people.
I still think that "The Graduate" is a cool movie.

He was interested in that area of chemistry, and iinm is one of your age cohort (not that

Sorry, I assumed that was the right word. Someone who really _is_ a
scientist, not someone who just thinks they are - like those blokes at
the ICR, for instance. Someone with an actual degree in a scientific
field from an accredited source. I work in health insurance, and all

You've set the bar a bit low, if "an actual degree in a scientific field" is all you want.
I wouldn't care for anything less than a graduate degree to count in that tally.
(If it did, you'd have to count *me*, and that's just scary.)
For preference, post-doctorate, one should go to work in science for a living.
And publish in peer-reviewed journals, of course.

I know of no body that "credentials" scientists. The term "scientist" is
a bit too vague to really be meaningful in this context. Some of those
"blokes" (which is much too nice a term) at ICR have degrees in science,
but whether that actually makes them "scientists" is arguable.

likewise there are probably some other blokes who have a much better
understanding of what science is about, and what's up in some
particular field, than other blokes with graduate degrees in said
fields.

I suppose I have the barest hint of credentials. It's very, very
rare that they would apply to anything I post, though.
I have a BS in Physics from Ohio State, with minors in Math and
Computer Science. When I pontificate on Life, the Universe and
Everything, that comes out of my personal reading, just a long
term interest in philosophical questions -- no credentials at all.
I work at Ohio State in the Physics Department, but I would
describe what I am as a technician. Most of what I do right now
is building electronics that will go into ATLAS, one of the next
generation high energy physics experiments. We hope to find the
Higgs boson. More broadly, I work in the Electronics Shop
(which we call ELLI), and my job is to support the Physics
Department in any way I can, which is usually at least vaguely
electronic in nature.
I do have my name on one published paper, a cast-of-thousands
production describing a power supply for CLEO3, an earlier
project. I analyzed a control board and showed that what we were
getting was actually what we should be getting, and that was
all right.

Putting the latter point aside, does (Indiana?) certify science teachers for high schools
on the strength of a B.S. degree, or did you need graduate course work in education to
top off your creds?

To teach high school science in Indiana you need a BS or BA in a
science field and a certain number of courses in a secondary field (ie.
biology and chemistry or physics and chemistry) in which you would be
licensed. Then you must take 1-2 years of coursework in education and,
of course do a semester student teaching (for which you don't get paid,
pay tuition, are not allowed to work after school, and work your butt
off). Some people use the education coursework toward a masters
degree, I just put the courses toward my humanities credits needed for
my bachelors.
If you noticed that I didn't respond as quickly as usual...yesterday
was the first day back for teachers. We get kids tomorrow. :-)
