Sans Secombe, but with ***** Emery...
Secombe was a strange bloke. He was a trained operatic tenor as well
as a very funny man. He combined these in a 1952 Ealing comedy where
he played a circus clown going for a new career.
When I was a small boy I won a pair of guest tickets to Hulton's Boys
and Girl's Exhibition, It was opened by Harry Secombe and we were part
of his party. He kept us laughing and made a great impression on us.
As a Goon I thought he was a genius. He went on to sing in musicals
like Oliver and Pickwick (the hit song "If I ruled the World" where
the trained operatic tenor overloaded the studio sound systems on top
of the Pops).
But later on he hosted the Sunday evening God slot on BBC television.
His voice had gone but he still tried to sing hymns to thunderous
applause from the studio audiences.

His first real training was as an artillery gunner!

I have read his autobiography. (Quite why he chose to write a
biography about a car escapes me for the moment!)
"Goon, but not Forgotten".
Sad to say that you do not get a mention in it!

Hulton Press published the Eagle comic. After one exhibition I wrote
telling them how much I liked it. The next year they invited half a
dozen kids who'd done that to a "conference" to get ideas for the next
one. When it was held, they sent the kids tickets.

I was an Eagle reader as well. One of the pleasures of returning from
the annual holiday was to pick up the back issues from the newsagent,
lay them out on the ground and read across three episodes at a go. I
did eventually get to meet Harry Secombe but I was quite a large boy
by then. He was a guest speaker at a BIPP fellow's dinner - must have
been around 1982. He was a very entertaining speaker and seemed to be
a genuinely nice guy. Shame he turned to the dark side (Songs of
Praise),

I'm pretty dure that he was an atheist.
Anyone with any brains serving in WW2 became one.

I think that I still have one in my archives.
In fact, I am sure of it.
My fave was the Mekon!
My mate in grade 5, Clive Herde, was spoilt rotten and had the whole
collection.
He also had copious quantities of Thunderbirds stuff as well.

I did not like Dan for that very reason, and admired the Mekon for the
same reason.
Even at the tender age of 8, I saw Dan as a bloodthirsty irrational
impulsive and indoctrinated imperialist, but the Mekon as an highly
intelligent "freedom fighter".
If the allegory of an Xtian Missionary for Dan was in fact intended,
it succeeded in big lumps!
It turned me off the specious domineering imperialist holocaust of
space, and made me side with the oppressed natives, who were being
sold a crock-o-*****.

Thanks for the links - I had The Last Goon Show Of All on video but
lent it and never got it back.
There were some other videos of the Telegoons and even the real
people in the Mukkinese Battle Horn.
Sans Secombe, but with ***** Emery...
Secombe was a strange bloke. He was a trained operatic tenor as well
as a very funny man. He combined these in a 1952 Ealing comedy where
he played a circus clown going for a new career.
His first real training was as an artillery gunner!
When I was a small boy I won a pair of guest tickets to Hulton's Boys
and Girl's Exhibition, It was opened by Harry Secombe and we were
part of his party. He kept us laughing and made a great impression on
us.
You lucky *****! ;)
Hulton Press published the Eagle comic. After one exhibition I wrote
telling them how much I liked it. The next year they invited half a
dozen kids who'd done that to a "conference" to get ideas for the next
one. When it was held, they sent the kids tickets.
Did you get one?

A pair. I went with the kid next door. Like I said, we were part of
Secombe's party when he opened it.

Maybe now some of those who have remained unexposed, will understand

They weren't "all together, the original Goons".
The first series aldo had Michael Bentine.

I especially enjoyed his appearances.
Mostly in "The Canal", "The Spectre of Tintagel", and "Drums along the
Mersey"!

Mr Bentine's later stuff, I found very turgid and bordering on the ego
maniacal.
He later relied not on humour, but his limited mastery of mimicry, of
which Sellers was a far superior exponent.
In fact, I have deleted all of Bentine's later offerings, judging them
as a waste of space.
