PING: stoney & John Hachmann |
I recall we were all talking aircraft the other day, thought you might
enjoy this.
Seen in a sig on another forum:
An F-111 was flying escort with a B-52 and generally making a nuisance
of himself by flying rolls around the lumbering old bomber. The message
for the B-52 crew was, "Anything you can do, I can do better." Not to
be outdone, the bomber pilot announced that he would rise to the
challenge, however, the B-52 continued flying straight and level.
Perplexed, the fighter pilot asked, "So? What did you do?" "We just
shut down two engines."

So the poor Biffer struggled along on a mere 6 engines...

There's a bunch of them like that. One is the BUFF pilot puts the
autopilot on and is gone from sight for several minutes then is back.
What did you do? asked the fighter jock.
I took a leak, washed my hands, and microwaved my lunch.

Sorry to nit-pick, but
1. F-111 makes lousy fighter, despite the 'F' designation. IIRC they
were originally meant to replace the F-4, but because they were not
very good as a fighter, they switched to being fighter-bomber, as well
as tactical/sub-strategic nuclear bomber. The F-4 was forced to stay
on until the F-15 and F-16 became available. More likely to be an F-15
doing escort or CAP. OTOH, I don't think bombers use escorts anymore,
anyway.
2. The F-111 would be more likely flying 'under the treetops'
using TFR to deliver precision air-to-ground weapons, than flying with a
BUFF.

And in the Navy, the F4 was kept in service until the F14 became available.
Robert Strange McNamara had the idea that we could save a lot o' money by
having a common fighter for both USAF and USN. Of course, the a/c wasn't
really common at all, because the USN version needed a strengthened keel for
catapult bridle and arresting hook.
Anyway, I was carrier-qualifying in the F8 aboard Coral Sea in 1968 when the
F111 came aboard for carrier suitability trials. Turned out it was
unsuitable :-). The a/c was so long that the jet blast deflector (the
hinged, barn-door-like plate that pivots up from the deck behind the a/c)
couldn't be raised. This meant that the entire aft deck had to be clear
when the F111 went off the cat. Rather a bottleneck for flight ops :-(.

I recalled the dual-role intent of the 111, but never knew why the Navy
never got their share. Gen'l Dynamics plane, right? Grumman would have
remembered a tape measure..<g>

I first heard that from a relative who flew Lancasters in the war
about an annoying Americn P-51 pilot.
